Primary Purpose The Senior Data Scientist at ComEd will apply the scientific method to extract knowledge and insights from data, including time‑series (smart‑meters, smart‑grid, and other IoT), structured relational data, and unstructured text and media. Working closely with internal stakeholders, information architects, data engineers, project managers, and other teams, the role turns data into critical information to inform decision making. The scientist will mine big and small data, validate findings with the business, and share analysis outputs in a business‑friendly manner. Topics include artificial intelligence, machine learning, feature engineering, data mining, and data manipulation/storage. The position may require extended hours for storm or emergency coverage.
Primary Duties
Develop key predictive models that improve customer experience, operational performance, and safety.
Recommend data sampling techniques, data collection, and data cleaning specifications and approaches; apply missing data treatments as needed.
Analyze data using advanced analytics techniques to support process improvement with modern frameworks (Python, R, Scala, Spark, Hadoop, etc.).
Access and enrich data from various company systems of record and data warehouses across multiple departments.
Build, modify, monitor, and maintain high‑performance computing systems.
Provide expert data and analytics support to multiple business units.
Work with stakeholders and subject‑matter experts to understand business needs, goals, and objectives; translate them into data science projects.
Collaborate with other analytics teams across Exelon to improve analytical capabilities.
Job Scope
Support business‑unit strategic planning with a strategic view of machine‑learning technologies.
Advise stakeholders on machine‑learning findings and recommend actions to improve operational performance.
Provide key stakeholders with machine‑learning analyses to position the company for the future.
Educate stakeholders on advanced analytics capabilities through presentations, workshops, and publications.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative discipline (Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Finance, Operations Research, Physics, Statistics, or related).
4‑7 years of experience developing hypotheses, applying machine‑learning algorithms, validating results with multi‑terabyte datasets, and extracting actionable insights.
Strong knowledge in at least two areas: machine learning, artificial intelligence, statistical modeling, data mining, information retrieval, or data visualization.
Proven experience deploying predictive analytics using one or more leading languages (Python, R, Scala, etc.) and working in an open‑source Unix environment.
Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to translate findings into actionable recommendations for business partners and executives.
Preferred Qualifications
Education: Master’s or Ph.D. in a quantitative discipline.
Prior exposure to data structures for smart‑meters, billing, or outage management; experience in the utilities or broader energy sector.
Full‑cycle data science experience, including acquisition, maintenance, processing, analysis, and communication.
Expert coding skills (Python, R, Scala, SQL) and experience with large datasets on columnar and big‑data platforms.
Ability to translate executive vision into analytical methods, strong time‑management and presentation skills.
