Level Recruiting is seeking an experienced Controller
to lead financial operations and provide strategic financial guidance for a luxury construction firm based in San Francisco. This role will oversee all accounting functions, financial reporting, job costing, and cash flow management while partnering with senior leadership to drive profitability and operational efficiency.
This is an in-office position based in San Francisco. Remote work is not available.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee all accounting operations including accounts payable/receivable, general ledger, payroll, and month‑end/year‑end close processes
Prepare timely and accurate financial statements, management reports, and key performance metrics
Lead annual budgeting process and provide ongoing variance analysis and forecasting
Manage relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, and banking partners
Construction Accounting & Job Costing
Implement and maintain robust job costing systems to track project profitability in real‑time
Prepare comprehensive Work‑in‑Progress (WIP) reports analyzing contract values, costs incurred, estimated costs to complete, over/underbilling positions, and projected profit margins for all active projects
Review and approve change orders, ensuring proper documentation and financial controls
Monitor project budgets, percentage‑of‑completion calculations, and revenue recognition in accordance with ASC 606
Collaborate with project managers to improve estimating accuracy and cost control
Analyze WIP aging and take proactive measures to accelerate billing and collections
Strategic Leadership
Provide financial insights and recommendations to support business decisions
Develop and monitor internal controls, policies, and procedures
Identify opportunities for process improvements and system enhancements
Support contract negotiations and risk assessment for new projects
Qualifications Required:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
8+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a controller or senior accounting role
Strong construction accounting background with expertise in job costing, percentage‑of‑completion, WIP reporting, and revenue recognition
CPA or CMA certification preferred
Proficiency with construction management and accounting software (Sage 300 CRE, Foundation, or similar)
Advanced Excel skills and experience with financial systems implementation
Must be willing to work in‑office in San Francisco
Preferred:
Experience with luxury residential or custom construction projects
Knowledge of California prevailing wage requirements and payroll
Familiarity with multi‑entity accounting structures
