Overview
Our client is seeking a knowledgeable and experienced Senior Finance and Accounting Director. They will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the accounting department and leading a team of four employees. The Senior Director directs the fiscal functions, ensures budget conformance and compliance with grants, banking, and other governing requirements, and implements policies and procedures in line with established accounting and financial standards to safeguard the organization’s financial integrity and achieve financial objectives. The position also focuses on budgeting in partnership with the CFAO and other senior management, and will provide best-practice recommendations for process improvements. The Senior Director of Finance and Accounting will oversee the audit of the organization’s financial and programmatic operations, including an annual OMB A-133 audit.
Essential Responsibilities
General Accounting — Oversee the timely and accurate execution of monthly close processes, including checklists and timetables.
Cash Management — Ensure all bank and investment accounts are recognized in a timely manner.
Payroll — Direct and oversee payroll functionality, including system setup, labor allocation, payroll tax liabilities, benefits processing, and related payroll activities.
Assets Management, Inventory, and Systems — Oversee fixed asset schedules, depreciation entries, and related accounts.
Financial Reporting, Analysis, and Budgeting — Oversee the production, review, and distribution of monthly financial reports (cash flow, P&L, budget vs actual, project reports, funder reports, and reconciliations) and monthly project reports to departmental managers and senior management.
Audit and Tax — Direct and prepare for financial audits; recommend procedural improvements.
Policies & Procedures — Assist the CFAO in implementing and maintaining internal controls.
Supervision — Manage a team of four and evaluate performance of accounting personnel.
Training and Customer Service — Prepare or oversee regular trainings organization-wide around procedures related to reimbursements, card usage, payroll, time and attendance, onboarding, and related systems.
Essential Skills & Experience
BA in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration required
MA or CPA highly preferred
Minimum 7 years of professional accounting experience required
At least 4 years in nonprofit organizations and 4 years in a supervisory role required
Proficient with Sage Intacct, Concur, ADP, Salesforce, and Microsoft Office
Experience with nonprofit accounting and OMB A-133 audits
Strong ability to analyze financial data, prepare reports, and develop projections; adept with reporting software and spreadsheets
Knowledge of GAAP and federal/state financial regulations
Supervisory experience required
