Summary

The Electroencephalographic Technologist (EEG Tech) works under the direction of the Supervisor and according to lab protocols to perform routine, specialized, and complex neurodiagnostic procedures. Responsibilities include EEGs, ambulatory studies, Phase I Video EEG in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU), Long Term (LTM) monitoring, live patient EEG monitoring, and other specialized procedures in inpatient, outpatient, and critical care settings. The EEG Tech ensures electrode integrity, technical quality, and accurate documentation, providing physicians with data essential for diagnosis and treatment. The role also involves departmental participation in quality improvement, training, and compliance activities.

Responsibilities Perform routine and ambulatory EEG studies and complex neurodiagnostic procedures including LTM and EMU monitoring.

Prepare patients by gathering comprehensive history, educating on procedures, and ensuring safety and comfort.

Place electrodes accurately using the international 10/20 system, maintain technical integrity, and document electrode application.

Round on continuous neurodiagnostic patients (EMU/LTM) to verify recording quality, correct artifacts, and reapply electrodes as needed.

Provide continuous video observation and annotate clinical and electrographic events for adult and pediatric patients.

Troubleshoot and maintain neurodiagnostic equipment, notifying leadership of issues promptly.

Manage data according to department protocol, including REDCap, EEG database, Apex, and billing; produce shift change and status reports.

Communicate professionally with physicians and interdisciplinary clinical staff via phone, Voalte, and email.

Document regular quality assessments of technical and clinical skills annually.

Participate in department meetings, medical center training sessions, and UCSF Living PRIDE standards compliance.

Perform any other duties related to patient care activities or facility management as required.

Obtain a minimum of 12 hours of department-level education or training in neurodiagnostics each year covering all modalities performed.

Qualifications Possession of current CPR certification.

Obtain ABRET R. EEG T. credential within two years.

Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.

High school graduate or GED.

Graduate from an accredited training program in Electroneurodiagnostics or a combination of training and experience.

Demonstrated competency in performing EEGs, including LTM, EMU, and other modalities.

Prior experience working with an interdisciplinary health provider team.

Effective communication in English, both orally and in writing.

Good interpersonal skills in dealing with patients, family, caregivers, physicians, and clinical staff.

Proficient in computer skills including Word, Excel, and online communication.

Strong time management, problem solving, and self‑initiation skills.

Ability to work variable shifts, days,, and weekends.

Demonstrated ability to be an independent, motivated self‑starter.
