We are seeking an experienced Critical Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant for a role within the critical care department at Carolinas Medical Center. Primarily this role will cover either the Cardiac or Neuro ICUs. This is an opportunity to live and work in one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country.
Qualifications
At least one year of experience as an inpatient PA or Acute Care NP
Graduation from an accredited ACNP or PA program; post‑graduate ICU fellowship preferred
Certification as an ACNP from a nationally recognized certifying body (for NPs) or certification from the National Commission on Certification of PAs (for PAs)
North Carolina license, NC DEA, BLS and ACLS required
Responsibilities
Rotate 13‑hour shifts (7a‑8p or 7p‑8a) with rotating weekends and holidays; coverage includes at least 50% night shift, weekends, and holidays
Provide 24/7 inpatient acute care for adults in Cardiac or Neuro ICUs
Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, develop and implement treatment plans, and prescribe medications as appropriate
Order and interpret laboratory and radiology examinations, and manage ventilator settings and vasopressor therapy
Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the patient medical record
Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and contribute to policies and procedures as requested
Physical Requirements Work requires walking, standing, sitting, lifting, reaching, bending, stooping, pushing and pulling. Must be able to lift and support the weight of 35 pounds in handling patients, medical equipment and supplies. Must speak English fluently and in understandable terms. Must possess intact sense of sight, hearing, smell, touch and finger dexterity. Must have the ability to react and perform in stressful situations.

Must have or be eligible for a DEA license
Approved to practice as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in the state one works; eligible for prescriptive authority application through the Board of Nursing or Medical Board in SC required
BLS required per policy guidelines; expiration date greater than 90 days from date of beginning practice

Job Summary Includes Neonatal, critical care, emergency services and includes cardio‑thoracic surgery. Patients are typically intubated on ventilators and/or have hemodynamic instability. The focus is on very invasive procedures and the hemodynamic management of very critical patients. Manages ventilator settings, vasopressors and solve complex clinical cases. Schedule includes a mixed rotation of shifts covering weekdays, nights, swing, holidays and weekends. (50%‑90% of FTE Includes weekend and/or night coverage).
Essential Functions
Performs initial and periodic medical history, physical examinations, and daily assessments.
Records findings of examinations, assessments and plan of care.
Performs a wide range of surgical and/or medical procedures.
Writes appropriate prescriptions and administers medications.
Orders and interprets laboratory and radiology examinations.
