RN Supervisor (T&RC) Educator 17N Surgical Oncology Full Time Nights – Stony Brook Medicine Position Summary At Stony Brook Medicine, our Registered Nurses are critical members of the team who diagnose and treat responses to actual or potential health problems by means of nursing methods and techniques such as case finding, health teaching and counseling. Our valued team members provide care supportive to our patients' health and well-being, while adhering to a medical regimen. The RN Supervisor functions as the unit educator or an educator in a specific department. In addition, this position may provide individualized direct patient care utilizing the skills and knowledge relevant to the care of such patients. This position provides supervision to the Registered Nurses and ancillary personnel and reports directly to the Nurse Manager.

Duties of an Educator

Assumes responsibility and accountability for the delivery of nursing care to all assigned patients.

Assumes preceptor role in orientation of nursing personnel and students on the unit when needed. Provides written documentation to nursing leadership of achieved competencies by the orientee according to the standards of care for the unit/service.

Develops, implements and evaluates unit specific orientation for both experienced and inexperienced nursing staff.

Plans in-service programs, conferences and lectures, thereby encouraging the continued development of nursing staff.

Educates nursing staff (including technical skills and use of equipment) utilizing verbalization and return demonstration to assure successful completion and achievement of competencies.

Identifies and documents nursing staff’s learning need’s assessment, learner objectives, and the context of programs, resources, and methods of evaluation used.

Provides ongoing instruction of technical skills and equipment in accordance to the hospital policies and procedures to all nursing staff.

Monitors the quality of nursing care rendered and the documentation of the nursing process through direct interaction with nursing staff members and their assigned patients and families.

Coordinates delivery of patient care by all health professionals by actively sharing knowledge and ideas at Discharge Planning Rounds, House Staff Work Rounds and other sessions as appropriate.

Attends and participates in Joint Practice Committees with physicians, administrators and nursing related to the clinical area. Represents and clarifies the needs of the nursing staff and the patient population.

Working Conditions Working conditions may involve exposure to infectious disease, blood, body fluids and/or tissue as well as other unpleasant elements such as accidents, injuries and illness. May be exposed to and be required to handle varying unpredictable, emergency and crisis situations. Occasionally subjected to irregular hours and pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries. This position is classified by OSHA as Category 1.

Qualifications Experience:

At least two (2) years post-licensure acute care experience in nursing. Two (2) years of experience in area of specialization is preferred.

Education:

Graduation from a National League of Nursing Accredited School of Nursing. Bachelors degree is preferred. BCLS certification required. Unit specific specialty certification preferred.

License:

Current license to practice as a registered nurse in New York State.

Only licensed nurse experience in an acute care facility will be counted towards experience.

Acute care is defined as medical services provided for illnesses that are short-term (usually less than 30 days), intense, and have a relatively severe to very severe course, requiring knowledge and expertise in the vigilant monitoring of subtle changes in the patient’s condition, as well as ability to quickly recognize and identify potential problems and conditions resulting from a previous disease.

Physical Demands

Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing/walking, lifting, positioning, pushing and/or transferring of patients.

Lifting supplies/equipment.

Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling and crouching.
