The MatPel
Controller
leads the company’s financial management and accounting functions, supporting strategic and financial goals. This role helps minimize risk, strengthen profitability, and guide forward-looking decisions. The Controller oversees all accounting operations, ensures compliance with GAAP and state and federal requirements, provides timely financial reporting, prepares forecasts and budgets, and maintains clear, consistent processes across the organization.
Main Responsibilities Provides a broad and detailed understanding of MatPel’s financial position and the impact of current decisions on future profitability and liquidity.
Actively participates as a member of the Management Team and contributes to company goals and objectives.
Offers financial insight to leadership and project managers to help them understand how today’s decisions affect future outcomes. Feedback is given verbally and in writing when needed.
Ensures MatPel carries adequate insurance coverage across all areas.
Accounting Functions Responsible for all accounting operations and adherence to GAAP, including evaluating and improving systems, policies, and procedures.
Oversees accurate and timely accounting entries and financial reporting.
Ensures compliance with all state and federal requirements for hiring, payroll, reporting, and taxes.
Maintains adequate liability, workers’ compensation, and other required insurance coverage; works proactively with insurance brokers to anticipate changes.
Oversees completion of external audits and conducts internal audits to validate results.
Maintains strong internal controls, checks, and balances to ensure data accuracy and protection of company assets.
Continually evaluates and improves accounting systems and processes to increase efficiency and reduce company risk.
Staffing Ensures Accounting Team members meet goals and perform at a high standard.
Monitors accuracy and reliability of staff work.
Provides ongoing feedback, coaching, and development support.
Ensures job descriptions and objectives are clear, current, and acknowledged by each employee.
Conducts semiannual performance reviews in January and July.
Responsible for internal audits, tax preparation, banking relationships, and insurance renewals.
Completes internal audit and prepares tax documents for the CPA by February 20.
Provides the CPA with quarterly financial reports and schedules semiannual tax‑planning meetings.
Maintains banking relationships that offer strong rates and service for daily operations, lines of credit, and other borrowing needs.
Ensures all liability insurance coverage is adequate and negotiates competitive rates.
Ensures full compliance with city, state, and federal regulations related to accounting within required timelines.
Provides management with accurate and timely reporting that reflects both historical performance and future trends.
Ensures all income and expenses are posted to the correct periods, including monthly WIP adjustments.
Completes month‑end close and review by the 10th of each month and distributes reports according to the MatPel reporting schedule.
Provides the Management Team with a dashboard, cash‑flow report, and financial narrative at bi‑weekly meetings. Monthly reporting includes budget variance explanations and proposed corrective actions.
Produces additional financial reports as requested by the President or General Manager.
Project WIP Reporting
Partners with project managers on cost‑to‑complete and monthly WIP adjustments.
Provides project‑level financial support as needed.
Leadership Promotes a collaborative, solutions‑focused environment and contributes to companywide success.
Acts as a proactive leader on the Management Team and supports other departments in reaching their goals.
Pursues ongoing professional development in leadership, management, and industry technology.
Required Experience, Traits, And Skills
Bachelor’s degree in business or finance.
CPA strongly preferred.
Eight to ten years of Controller experience in construction, including extensive job‑costing background.
Strong experience with construction accounting software and job‑management systems.
Skilled in budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, projection modeling, and dashboard reporting.
Deep knowledge of AP, AR, schedule of values, payroll, and all functions required for accurate and timely financial and job‑cost reporting.
Experience with union reporting and certified payroll.
Strong leadership and people‑management skills.
Detail‑oriented while able to maintain awareness of broader company goals.
Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
Able to work under tight deadlines and manage multiple priorities.
Open to feedback and coaching.
Completes at least 12 hours of continuing education annually.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
Ability to work in an office environment.
Ability to sit for extended periods and occasionally walk, stand, stoop, kneel, or reach.
Ability to use hands for keyboarding, handling objects, and operating office tools.
Ability to lift or move items up to 20 pounds.
Ability to communicate effectively in person and by phone, and to read and input data on a computer screen.
