Arcadis is searching for a Senior Structural Engineer to join our growing Resilience Water Team in Virginia, Maryland, Washington D.C., or Georgia. This role supports a nationally recognized technical staff and focuses on Municipal & Industrial Water/Wastewater and Water Resources infrastructure design and construction consulting.
Role accountabilities In this role you will lead water/wastewater design engineering and construction projects. You will be responsible for leading structural condition assessments, producing design calculations, technical reports, permitting, detailed design and engineering plans, and specifications for Water/Wastewater projects—including plant upgrades, storage facilities, pipelines, storm water systems, pump stations, and distribution/collection systems.
Responsibilities include:
Mentor entry‑level and junior structural engineering staff.
Organize and conduct structural investigations, calculations, and planning work with a well‑defined scope.
Research feasibility of alternative design approaches, site conditions and regulatory agency specifications.
Lead the development of calculations, plans, specifications, requests for proposals, and other contract documents.
Work directly with a variety of engineering disciplines, office/project staff, clients, and sub‑contractors throughout the project life cycle, providing clear oral and written communication and coordinating meetings, client presentations, and written reports.
Exercise judgment on work details and preliminary selections of engineering alternatives.
Manage the production of engineering and construction drawings, specifications, bid packages, and cost estimates.
Function as Engineer of Record, Task Manager or Project Engineer to manage budgets and schedules, lead deliverables, and coordinate for timely completion and submission of projects.
Some travel may be required for project site visits, client meetings, general planning purposes or to oversee construction activities.
Qualifications & Experience Required Qualifications
12 years of structural engineering experience in Water/Wastewater.
Bachelor's degree in Structural or Civil Engineering (Structural emphasis).
Professional Engineer (PE) License in Structural or Civil/Structural.
Key Attributes The ideal candidate should possess strong structural analysis and design skills, proficiency in STAAD Pro and other structural software, and excellent technical writing and editing abilities. Experience in preparing, reviewing, and approving project drawings, specifications, schedules, and cost estimates is essential. Proficiency in AutoCAD/REVIT and a thorough working knowledge of building codes (IBC, ACI, etc.) are required.
Preferred Qualifications Preferred qualifications include a Master’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering with a focus on structural engineering and at least 15 years of practical involvement in the Water/Wastewater sector. A Professional Engineer license across multiple states and an SE license or NCEES record with MLSE are a plus. Completion of the NCEES 16‑Hour structural exam and proficiency in MATHCAD are also preferred.
