Cloud Engineer (Public Trust) – Washington, DC (Onsite, 5 Days/Week)
Role Summary
The Cloud Engineer will design, architect, configure, and support cloud-based solutions within Microsoft Azure Commercial Cloud or AWS environments. This role involves integrating public cloud services, implementing Infrastructure as Code (IaC), and supporting DevOps-driven software development efforts. The engineer will troubleshoot complex issues, enhance cloud security posture, and collaborate with internal and external technical teams. This position supports a Department of Transportation (DOT) program and requires onsite work at a government location in Washington, DC.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, and update cloud environment configurations to support application workloads.
- Configure and manage Azure components including: Subscriptions, Resource Groups, VNets, Subnets, load balancers, App Services, Azure Batch, Virtual Machines, tagging, billing, policy implementation, and security controls.
- Configure and manage AWS components including: Accounts, IAM Users/Roles, VPCs, subnets, load balancers, network routes, Transit Gateway, Control Tower, Systems Manager, Config Manager, stack sets, WAF, CloudFront, and Route53.
- Execute shell scripting and command-line operations for cloud resource management.
- Design and build automation platforms using IaC tools (CloudFormation and/or Terraform); automate with PowerShell and Python.
- Provide operational cloud support, including communicating level of effort and status to cloud leadership.
- Support data calls and reporting on provisioned cloud resources.
- Identify and communicate opportunities to strengthen cloud security posture.
- Collaborate with external development teams to understand and support workload architectures across AWS and Azure environments.
Required Technical Skills
- 5+ years deploying and configuring application workloads within Microsoft Azure Commercial Cloud or AWS Cloud.
- 7+ years total hands‑on technology experience, with strong understanding of compute, network, and storage principles.
- Demonstrated expertise configuring and supporting cloud application workloads in Azure or AWS.
- Strong command-line and shell scripting capabilities.
- Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code methodologies; experience with CloudFormation and/or Terraform.
- Scripting experience using PowerShell and Python.
Preferred / Nice‑to‑Have Skills
- Deep understanding of cloud engineering methodologies and best practices across cloud providers.
- Experience assessing, customizing, optimizing, and maintaining modern technologies covering network, compute, and storage.
- Hands‑on experience with cloud orchestration tools and continuous delivery processes.
- Proficiency automating with Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, Packer, PowerShell, or Python using remote APIs.
- Experience with containers, orchestration systems, and container hardening.
- AWS Solutions Architect Associate and/or Azure Administrator Associate certifications (or higher).
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree with 4–8 years of relevant experience, or Master’s degree with 2–6 years of relevant experience.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or Green Card Holder with at least 3 years of U.S. residency .
- Must be able to obtain a Public Trust clearance (no interim accepted).
- Full‑time onsite availability required (no telework).
About the Team / Company
This role is part of the Leidos Digital Modernization Group, supporting the U.S. Department of Transportation. Work is performed onsite at a government facility located at 1200 New Jersey Ave SE, Washington, DC 20591. The position is contingent, with potential for extension and possible conversion to Leidos FTE.
