Era Living is seeking an RN with dementia care experience to oversee the care team in our memory care unit (The Terrace) at Ida Culver House Broadview, an assisted living community in North Seattle, WA. The Terrace Manager oversees the care of more than 40 residents living with dementia and is an integral member of the retirement community’s leadership team.
The Terrace is newly renovated, at full occupancy, and has no outstanding investigations or deficiencies. We use the Best Friends Approach to dementia care and provide extensive training in this methodology.
Primary Responsibilities The Terrace Manager is responsible for all activities in the memory care unit, including staff scheduling and supervision, health and personal care service provision, evaluation of residents, and interaction with families. They will be the community’s primary expert in dementia care and provide ongoing training and coaching to staff, as well as educate families as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Assess residents with cognitive impairment accurately, identifying the level of their impairment
With the Community Health Director, determine the appropriateness of a resident moving into the Terrace environment, including participating in the Move-in assessment and reviewing Physician Statements and Physician Orders for service
Plan services based on residents’ needs, abilities and preferences
Design individualized behavior plans for residents and share these with staff and families; revise plans to meet client needs
Work with Life Enrichment staff to ensure resident programming occurs throughout the day, addressing residents’ preferences and cognitive abilities
Model excellent dementia communication skills with all residents and teach these skills to staff and families
Provide skilled nursing services for residents, as needed and qualified
Document all plans, service provision, and changes in resident condition
Maintain organized and confidential health records for residents according to standard
Ensure a safe environment for all residents
Work with the broader community team to ensure residents living with dementia receive appropriate services
Responsible for purchasing items needed for the unit and managing related budget
Review residents’ billing statements to ensure accuracy, as needed
Supervisory Responsibilities
Share hiring responsibilities for new care staff with the Community Health Director, including interviewing, references, and establishing standards and structured orientation and required training for all Terrace staff
Establish staffing schedules to ensure coverage; flex staffing based on census and acuity
Address work performance issues with staff, ensure service quality as designed in the service plan, provide performance evaluations, coach and mentor staff
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of nursing assessment for older adults and persons with dementia
Expertise in dementia care and ability to describe Terrace services to staff, families, and the public
Able to assess residents with dementia accurately for their needs
Skilled in supervising paraprofessional staff
Able to use computers, Word, Excel, email, and internet
Ability to flex schedule
Able to follow up all incident reports and strategize for residents with dementia
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form
Ability to perform duties in compliance with universal precautions, fire safety, infection control and sanitation procedures, and Era Living policies and procedures
Ability to read, write and communicate in English
Ability to pass DSHS background check, required
Education and Experience
Graduate of approved School of Nursing and licensed as an RN able to practice nursing in the state of WA, required
Food Handler’s Certificate or ability to obtain within 14 days of hire
