Responsibilities Supervises departmental shop and associated personnel. Oversees development and maintenance of existing and planned sample preparation laboratories. Works closely with instructors on organization and logistical support for departmental summer field camp and class field trips. Works with faculty and graduate students on design, construction, training, and maintenance of equipment and sample needs associated with Earth Science laboratory courses. Designs and fabricates equipment for research and instructional purposes. Serves as department safety officer and trains students in safe lab and field practices. Serves as project manager for departmental space maintenance, renovations and new construction.

Qualifications

High School Diploma

1-3 years in a shop setting

Basic carpentry, welding, plumbing, electrical skills

Basic repair skills for campus or field equipment

Ability to work independently or as part of a team

Ability to communicate effectively

Basic knowledge of construction design and fabrication

Comprehensive knowledge of shop practices and machining

Required to hold a valid driver's license, have a driving record in accordance with local policies and procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.

Job Functions And Percentages Of Time

30% Supervisor of Shops and Laboratories – administers activity and training of all personnel involved in use of the departmental mechanical shop, wet laboratory, rock cutting and crushing and polishing, and mineral separations laboratories, with special emphasis on training for safe and efficient operation of equipment; oversees scheduling of shop and lab facilities and conducts regular training; responsible for keeping shop and laboratories in good production condition; designs and fabricates new field, classroom, and laboratory equipment; selects employees; trains, and conducts performance evaluations of shop and lab personnel.

20% Field Program – responsible for logistics of planning and executing the six-week summer field course and academic year class field trips; oversees vehicle reservations, inventory and maintenance of field equipment; scouts potential field trip stops; leads discussions; hires and supervises casual employees; informs faculty, staff and students on safety, field techniques, vehicle care; accompanies large groups on field trips; serves as safety monitor.

15% Laboratory Support and Instruction – works closely with faculty and graduate students in preparation of materials and exercises for Earth Science classroom, laboratory, and field exercises; acquires and curates samples; acquires and maintains laboratory equipment; assists in design of new teaching modules; instructs department's graduate students, faculty and researchers and ensures safety practices.

15% Design and Engineering – consults with faculty, research staff, and students to design and construct instruments and equipment; involved in all stages of projects from conceptualization through design, material selection, layout, fabrication, and assembly; prepares cost estimates; researches commercial instrumentation; determines suitability for proposed fabrication.

10% Space Maintenance, Design and Construction – project manager advising chair and department manager on maintenance, remodel, and construction of departmental space; liaises with Physical Facilities; recommends improvements; assists new faculty with lab and office design; adheres to budget parameters.

10% Hazard Communication Coordinator – serves as liaison with Environmental Health and Safety to implement Hazard Communication Program; coordinates chemical waste, MSDS, compressed gas program; assists professors and researchers to meet EH&S safety requirements.
