Essential Job Functions This position is supervisory work ensuring the day‑to‑day efficient operation of the Courtroom Clerks in the Juvenile department. Functions as a first‑line supervisor responsible for planning, assigning, directing, and evaluating the work of a large staff of Courtroom Clerks. The Unit Supervisor, Court Operations is responsible for ensuring each courtroom is running efficiently by assigning Courtroom Clerks and monitoring their work production and professionalism.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Oversee the daily operations of the Juvenile Courtroom Clerks by providing supervision to the department.

Oversee all judicial aspects of the department, including ensuring procedures are followed properly.

Monitor daily work performance and work habits of employees, ensuring all employees are productive and adhering to office policies and procedures.

Review Juvenile court dockets, checking case folders and docket sheets for accuracy. Address errors with Courtroom Clerks when necessary.

Resolve issues or provide guidance and instruction to Courtroom Clerks.

Liaise between the Clerks’ Office and various Judge’s chambers to resolve problems. Respond to other stakeholders’ inquiries such as the Private Bar and State Attorney’s Office.

Edit Juvenile Dockets.

Maintain logs and chain of custody. Provide support upon Filing of Notice of Appeal.

Coordinate file transfers and case file processing.

Order, maintain and distribute supplies, forms, and other items to staff.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

High school diploma (or GED equivalent).

Experience:

Three (3) years of work experience, preferably in court operations in a trial or appellate court in the United States, or in the fields of criminal justice, parole and probation, or legal or financial services, including two (2) years of the aforementioned court experience.

Note: A bachelor’s degree may substitute two (2) years of the required work experience.

A Paralegal/associate degree or 60 college credits may be substituted for two (2) years of non‑court work experience.

A Paralegal Certificate may be substituted for one (1) year of non‑court work experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

General office practices, procedures, and equipment.

Job‑related terminology, codes, comments, notations, orders, policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and laws.

Annotated codes of MD Courts, Judicial Proceedings of MD, and MD Rules and Procedures.

Court forms, practices, procedures, protocols, systems, and equipment required to support the Courtroom Clerks Unit, including but not limited to Juvenile case procedures and protocols.

Odyssey computer system.

Customer service etiquette.

Basic English and arithmetic, including spelling, punctuation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Customer service and handling problems tactfully and patiently.

Analyzing records, reports, and other business documents and noting details and facts pertinent to this assignment.

Usage of standard office equipment, computer equipment, and computer applications.

Communicating information effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Accuracy and attention to detail.

Assign, organize, coordinate, and evaluate the work of staff.

Multitask, adjust to situations quickly, set priorities, and handle pressure in a fast‑paced environment.

Understand and carry out complex verbal and written instructions.

Provide assistance, guidance, and direction to others in a polite and efficient manner.

Resolve unusual and/or complex situations in accordance with established procedures or assist staff in resolving cases requiring deviation from standard procedures.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, subordinates, superiors, and/or the general public.

Communicate clearly, tactfully, and effectively with judges, the public, police agencies, attorneys, and other court officials and personnel, both verbally and in writing.

Use standard office and business equipment, including but not limited to personal computers, word processing, spreadsheets, database software, copier, microfilm machine, register, scanner, fax machine, etc.

Recommend modifications to improve procedures and practices.

Physical Requirements Medium work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Required Safety Precautions

Wearing latex gloves when handling evidence.

Arranging for additional security for potentially volatile situations.

Work Environment The worker is subject to environmental conditions. Protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. Close proximity with dangerous felons.

Equipment, Machinery and Tools

Zoom and Teams video communication.

Computer to obtain and input case information.

Facsimile machine and scanners to send and receive time‑sensitive information.

Calculator for configuring judgment amounts, court costs, and defendant credits.

Video/CourtSmart System for recording open court proceedings.

Software and Computer Skills

Knowledge of the Judicial Information System, Odyssey, Zoom and Teams Video Communication, Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe, and CourtSmart.
