Thermal Design Engineer, Electronic Systems What To Expect

Tesla is seeking a highly motivated Thermal Design Engineer for the Electronic Systems teams to help develop best‑in‑class cooling solutions from silicon to vehicles to datacenters. The role involves design and validation of passive, active air‑ and liquid‑cooling solutions for electronic systems, either for vehicle platforms or off‑vehicle systems. It requires close collaboration with cross‑functional teams at different scales and external suppliers, and a deep understanding of fluid flow and heat transfer fundamentals.

Creative thinking, the ability to solve complex problems, and the capacity to work independently are paramount. The position operates in a dynamic, fast‑paced environment with tight timing and dynamic constraints.

Responsibilities

Design passive and active air and liquid‑cooling solutions for high‑power electronics—from silicon to vehicle to data centers.

Balance flow in complex flow networks.

Develop analytical and computational models of hydraulic and thermal systems.

Drive component selection (Chiller, CDU, Fan, Pump, Filter, TIM).

Optimize cooling solutions for performance and reliability.

Define thermal policy and control algorithms; characterize system response at different scales.

Drive validation and data analysis.

Contribute to module‑ and system‑level reliability.

Qualifications

Degree in Thermal/Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.

Minimum 2 years of industrial experience with evidence of exceptional performance.

Strong understanding of fundamentals of fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and thermodynamics.

Proficiency in numerical simulation of heat and fluid flow.

Experience in data centers is an asset.

Knowledge of semiconductor packaging and package‑level thermal/mechanical considerations is an asset.

Benefits

Competitive pay, with compensation ranging from $106,400 to $256,200 annual salary plus cash and stock awards.

Aetna PPO and HSA plans (2 medical plan options with $0 payroll deduction).

Family‑building, fertility, adoption, and surrogacy benefits.

Dental (including orthodontic coverage) and vision plans (both with $0 paycheck contribution).

Company‑paid HSA contribution when enrolled in the high‑deductible Aetna plan with HSA.

Healthcare and dependent‑care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA).

401(k) with employer match, Employee Stock Purchase Plan, and other financial benefits.

Company‑paid basic life, AD&D, short‑term and long‑term disability insurance.

Employee Assistance Program.

Sick and vacation time (flex time for salary positions) and paid holidays.

Back‑up childcare and parenting support resources.

Voluntary benefits: critical illness, hospital indemnity, accident insurance, theft & legal services, and pet insurance.

Weight loss and tobacco cessation programs.
