Cultural Care Coordinator - State Program Administrator Principal
At the State of Minnesota, employees play a critical role in developing policies, providing essential services, and working to improve the well-being and quality of life for all Minnesotans. The Cultural Care Coordinator will lead efforts to create, manage, and coordinate cultural education, services, programs, and activities for incarcerated American Indian individuals within DOC facilities. The coordinator reports to the Tribal Relations Director and collaborates closely to facilitate cultural training for DOC staff and to establish and strengthen partnerships with Tribal Nations, community resources, and individuals to ensure appropriate cultural services are provided.
Responsibilities
Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of cultural education and services for incarcerated Indigenous individuals.
Coordinate cultural training programs for DOC staff and partner with Tribal Nations and community stakeholders.
Manage relationships with Tribal governments and community-based organizations to provide culturally responsive services.
Prepare and maintain documentation of program activities and report program performance to senior leadership.
Ensure compliance with state telework policies requiring 50% in office for employees residing within 50 miles of DOC’s Central Office.
Minimum Qualifications
Three (3) years of demonstrated experience in program development, implementation, and quality review/improvement in one (1) or more of the following areas: working with the American Indian community; providing cultural care within the boundaries of a Tribal Nation or recognized Urban Indian community; interacting/participating with Tribal Governments, Tribal Affairs or Tribal Community based position.
A Bachelor’s degree or higher in Indian Affairs, Corrections, Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, or closely related field may substitute for one (1) year of experience.
Ability to communicate effectively through public speaking.
Ability to act in a manner that serves as an example of positive cultural values, attitudes, beliefs and actions.
Ability to respond decisively and calmly to high-risk crisis situations.
Knowledge and awareness of American Indian culture and history.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Indian Affairs, Corrections, Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, or closely related field.
Experience working in a correctional, criminal justice, or law enforcement setting.
Experience in Ojibwe and/or Dakota language.
Established working relationships with the American Indian community.
Physical Requirements The selected finalist is required to review and sign a Physical Demands Analysis (PDA) for this position.
Additional Requirements
Background checks including criminal history, offender registration, and other applicable background information in accordance with DOC policy.
Employment history/reference checks including sexual harassment incidents will also be conducted on the top candidate(s).
New employees will be fingerprinted within the first 30 days of employment.
