Brief Summary of Job Duties Under the supervision of the Director of Capital & Physical Planning, the Associate Director is responsible for the development and supervision of the Long Range Development Plan (LRDP) and related environmental and physical planning from programming through approval at the Campus, Office of the President, Regents, and California Coastal Commission. The role serves as the campus expert on long‑range and environmental planning, representing UC Santa Barbara in community and governmental relationships, coordinating with UCOP Physical and Environmental Planning to prepare the LRDP, Coastal Plan, and Environmental Impact Report (EIR), and managing professional consultants. The Associate Director works closely with Directors of Capital & Physical Planning, Design and Construction Services, and Facilities Management to ensure compliance with environmental laws and to support planning, programming, design, and implementation of projects subject to external or internal agency reviews. The position supervises a planning staff of up to two Senior Planners and one Principal Planner, as well as work‑study and intern positions.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalent experience and training.

Expert knowledge of city and environmental planning, architecture, and large‑scale site planning.

Strong political acumen, project management, negotiation, writing, analytical, public speaking, and proven ability to manage multiple projects with competing demands.

Expertise in building and maintaining professional relationships to achieve short and long‑range organizational goals.

In‑depth knowledge of the university’s architectural history, development plans, infrastructure, and ongoing construction plans.

Preferred Qualifications

7–9 years of experience in a closely related field.

Master’s degree in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, City Planning, or a related environmental planning field.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time

10% Administration – Develops and implements physical and environmental planning, manages staff, coordinates consultant services, and oversees budgets and approvals.

30% Long‑Range Planning – Manages preparation of the LRDP, stakeholder consultation, and liaison with regulatory agencies.

55% Environmental Review of Campus Projects – Reviews proposed projects for LRDP consistency, determines review levels, prepares CEQA documents, and coordinates approvals.

5% Community Representation and Presentations – Represents campus in community meetings, public hearings, and government relations.
