Job Description:
- The Phlebotomist I is responsible for performing blood draws and specimen collection while ensuring accuracy, patient comfort, and compliance with established procedures.
- This role includes specimen processing, documentation, and communication with patients and internal teams to support laboratory operations and maintain specimen integrity.
- Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge samples, and process specimens according to established procedures.
- Collect, store, split, freeze, and package specimens as required by test orders.
- Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients in a clear and courteous manner.
- Demonstrate proper techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Review and understand physician orders and laboratory requisition forms.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify accuracy of labels and test orders.
- Store specimens at required temperatures and follow protocols to maintain specimen integrity during transport.
- Record maintenance data, perform decontamination, and update patient information accurately.
- Comply with safety, health, and regulatory standards.
- Attend required department training sessions.
- Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory result information as appropriate.
- Valid phlebotomy certification as required by the state of employment.
- Ability to perform venipunctures in a fast-paced environment.
- Understanding of specimen handling, processing, and transport procedures.
- Ability to follow safety and regulatory guidelines.
- Minimum experience performing venipunctures in a laboratory or hospital setting.
- Experience using Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
- High School Diploma or GED.
