Power BI Developer at Actalent
The Power BI Developer designs, builds, and maintains interactive visual analytics solutions that enable data‑driven decision‑making with internal teams and external customers. This role partners with functional stakeholders, data engineers, and business leaders to translate raw data into clear, actionable insights delivered through Power BI data models, reports, and dashboards.
Responsibilities
Create, enhance, and optimize Power BI reports, dashboards, and scorecards that meet business requirements and adhere to visual design best practices.
Build robust tabular data models in Power BI, write efficient DAX calculations, and implement row‑level security to ensure accurate, secure analytics.
Connect Power BI to a variety of data sources (SQL Server, Azure Products, Data Lakes, OData, REST APIs, etc.) using Power Query and Direct Query/Import.
Diagnose and resolve performance bottlenecks in data models, queries, and visualizations; apply aggregation tables, indexing, and query folding where appropriate.
Maintain documentation of data models, report specifications, and data lineage; enforce naming conventions, version control, and publishing standards in Power BI Service.
Work closely with data engineers, solution architects, and business analysts to gather requirements, validate data quality, and ensure analytical solutions align with enterprise data strategy.
Set up data refresh schedules, monitor refresh failures, and implement alerting to guarantee continuous availability of reports.
Stay current on Power BI feature releases, industry trends, and emerging BI technologies; recommend enhancements that increase user adoption and analytical capability.
Essential Skills / Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, or any STEM field.
3+ years of hands‑on experience developing Power BI solutions for enterprise, departments, or C‑suite.
Expert proficiency with Power BI Desktop, Power BI Service, Power Query, and DAX.
Strong SQL skills; experience querying relational databases (SQL Server, Azure Synapse).
Proven ability to design schemas, create calculated columns/measures, and implement row‑level security.
Experience with data warehousing concepts and ETL/ELT processes (e.g., Azure Data Factory, SSIS).
Excellent problem‑solving, communication, and stakeholder‑management skills.
Strong design skills for end‑user adoption and business impact.
Eligible for Secret clearance.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Familiarity with other BI tools (Tableau, Qlik) and the ability to evaluate cross‑tool solutions.
Knowledge of Power Apps, Power Automate, or Microsoft Fabric for extending analytics workflows.
Exposure to big data technologies (Spark, Hadoop) and their integration with Power BI.
Experience in statistical analysis or data science (Python/R) for advanced analytics support.
Certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Data Analyst Associate (Power BI) or Azure Data Engineer Associate.
Work Environment This position requires onsite work in Rockville, MD, following a 3‑2‑1 policy: 3 days onsite, with 2 of those days being Tuesday and Wednesday, and 1 day of your choosing.
Job Type & Location Contract to Hire position based out of Rockville, MD.
Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $45.00 – $57.50 per hour.
