Departmental Overview The Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI) is a non‑profit, academic research organization formed through the partnership of UC Berkeley, UC San Francisco and UC Davis. Led by Executive Director Jennifer Doudna, IGI focuses on CRISPR‑based genome editing and its applications in human health, plant science, and biotechnology. The position is formally within the Vice Chancellor for Research Office but primarily supports IGI.
Position Summary Based at UC Berkeley, the IGI IP Director is a critical member of the organization’s management team. Reporting to the Chief Innovation and Entrepreneurship Officer (CIEO) and with a dotted line report to the IGI Executive Director, this role leads the short‑ and long‑term development of intellectual property strategy, industry collaborations, and entrepreneurial culture that supports startup creation.

Responsibilities Intellectual Property / Patents
IP Strategy & Development: Represent IGI on complex IP matters, meet with inventors, support experimental data for claims, and determine optimal filing strategies.
Portfolio Management & Prosecution: Independently develop and manage patent portfolios, work with outside counsel on filing and prosecution, negotiate claim sets, and develop worldwide phase strategies.
Landscape Analysis & IP Clearance: Perform novelty, patentability, right‑to‑use searches and deep landscape analyses, advise researchers on IP clearance.
Disclosure & Compliance: Oversee invention disclosures, determine patentability, and guide filing decisions; review draft publications and presentations for IP issues.
Legal Support & Liaison: Support the UC Office of the General Counsel and outside law firms in legal defense or infringement suits; track filings and liaise with IPIRA.
Policy & Process Improvement: Evaluate and improve IGI systems and procedures for effective IP management.
Business Development & Entrepreneurial Programs
Commercial Strategy & Counseling: Advise researchers on license access, startup incorporation, financing, business plans, and connect with VC resources.
Entrepreneurial Program Leadership: Develop and manage programs such as accelerators and fellowships; implement application processes, review proposals, and negotiate master agreements.
Contract Negotiation: Draft and negotiate agreements involving IP and licensing for internal and external parties.
External Representation & Networking: Market new technology to industry partners, facilitate startups, and represent IGI at external events.
Administration & Outreach
Contracts Management: Act as primary point of contact between IGI members and contracting teams; guide MTA, CDA, NDA processes.
Education & Outreach: Develop guidance and materials for IGI members on IP, technology transfer, commercialization, and startup activities.
Reporting & Compliance: Oversee IP budget and activity; ensure compliance with agreement terms and equitable access policies.
Professional Development: Attend national and regional meetings to stay abreast of scientific and patent law developments.
Required Qualifications
Expert knowledge of intellectual property laws, regulations, and university technology transfer practices; advanced scientific and managerial experience.
Ability to market technology to industrial partners.
Knowledge of contracts, grants, and gifts.
Contribution to new concepts and policy development.
Ability to generate pro forma estimates of equity holdings and valuations.
Experience marketing early‑stage science and technology.
Understanding of basic biology and genomics.
Strong design skills for publications and visual displays.
Bachelor’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications
Established network of biotech/genomics industry contacts.
Advanced scientific degree (MS or PhD) and/or JD, MBA, or equivalent experience.
Salary & Benefits For information on the comprehensive benefits package, visit the University of California’s Compensation & Benefits website. Under California law, Berkeley provides a compensation range and does not offer salaries outside that range. The budgeted annual salary range is $221,000.00 – $300,000.00; the full classification range is $176,100.00 – $355,900.00. This is an exempt monthly‑paid position.
