Departmental Overview The Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI) is a non‑profit, academic research organization formed through the partnership of UC Berkeley, UC San Francisco, and UC Davis. Led by Executive Director Jennifer Doudna, IGI focuses on CRISPR‑based genome editing and its applications in human health, agriculture, and biotechnologies.

Position Summary Based at UC Berkeley, the IGI IP Director is a critical member of the organization’s management team. Reporting to the Chief Innovation and Entrepreneurship Officer and with a dotted line reporting to IGI Executive Director, the position leads strategic development in intellectual property, industry collaboration, and entrepreneurial culture.

Responsibilities Intellectual Property/Patents

IP Strategy & Development: Represent IGI on complex IP matters, advising inventors and developing portfolio strategies.

Portfolio Management & Prosecution: Independently develop and manage patent portfolios, work with outside counsel on filings, editing drafts, and negotiating claim sets.

Landscape Analysis & IP Clearance: Conduct novelty, patentability, and state‑of‑the‑art searches, advise researchers on clearance.

Disclosure & Compliance: Oversee invention disclosures, evaluate patentability, review draft publications for IP issues.

Legal Support & Liaison: Support UC GC and outside law firms in legal defense, track filings, liaise with IPIRA, etc.

Policy & Process Improvement: Evaluate and continuously improve IGI’s IP systems and procedures.

Business Development & Entrepreneurial Programs

Commercial Strategy & Counseling: Advise researchers on licensing and start‑up opportunities, financing, business plan development, and VC resources.

Entrepreneurial Program Leadership: Develop and manage robust accelerator programs, handle donor engagement, application processes, and master agreements.

Contract Negotiation: Draft and negotiate complex agreements involving IP and licensing, ensuring compliance with IGI/UC policies.

External Representation & Networking: Market new technology, facilitate start‑ups, represent IGI at industry showcases and engagement boards, network with commercial entities.

Administration & Outreach

Contracts Management: Primary contact between IGI members and contracting teams, manage MTAs, NDAs, etc.

Education & Outreach: Provide counsel and develop materials for internal programs and guest talks.

Reporting & Compliance: Oversee IP budget, report on activity, ensure compliance with collaboration agreements, and equitable access with nonprofit partners.

Professional Development: Attend national and regional meetings to stay abreast of advances and legal trends.

Required Qualifications

Expert knowledge of laws, regulations, and practices related to IP, technology transfer, and scientific/technical skills.

Experience in marketing technology to industrial partners.

Knowledge of contracts, grants, and gifts.

Ability to develop new concepts and policies.

Ability to generate pro forma equity estimates.

Experience marketing early‑stage science and technology.

Understanding of basic biology and genomics.

Strong design skills for publications and visual displays.

Bachelor’s degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

Established network of biotech/genomics industry contacts.

Advanced scientific degree (MS/PhD) and/or JD/MBA or equivalent training.

Salary & Benefits The budgeted annual salary range is $221,000 – $300,000. The full classification range is $176,100 – $355,900. This is a full‑time (40 hrs/week) career position eligible for UC Benefits and an exempt monthly‑paid position.
