About the Role The Vice President Business Development Oncology Transactions will lead Business Development activities for the Oncology franchise, J&J Innovative Medicine’s largest and fastest growing therapeutic area. More specifically, this position will be accountable for leading the above‑specified activities in the Hematological Malignancies and Immuno‑Oncology (I/O) spaces.
Responsible for leading a team—identifying, evaluating, and executing value‑creating transactions to support the Pharma Group’s growth strategies across the end‑end Oncology portfolio. Directs the search, due diligence, business case development, negotiations, financing, and communications to senior management to execute transactions. Oversees the closing of deals, integration of assets, divestitures, and renegotiation of existing agreements as necessary. Helps develop a high external share of voice in the Oncology marketplace and leads a consistently high‑performing BD team.
Key Responsibilities
Source assets that drive near‑ and long‑term growth of the portfolio based on gaps identified.
Sustain the “freshness” of the Oncology pipeline by adding new assets to replace those lost to development attrition and ensuring sustained growth.
Integrate strategic and cross‑functional teams and ensure teams follow appropriate guidelines (e.g., WW420C).
Determine screening criteria and rationale for targeting new business opportunities aligned with J&J strategic goals.
Evaluate critical assumptions, risks, and opportunities to determine organizational impact.
Direct teams to make go/no‑go decisions in a timely manner based on available data.
Direct the development of business cases for new business opportunities aligned with strategic goals.
Determine which opportunities to bring to market based on assessment of research and valuation model results.
Develop procedures and ensure quality of the due diligence process, communicating to management and stakeholders transparently.
Lead negotiation, structuring, and closing of deals, overseeing execution of all contracts, amendments, and confidentiality agreements.
Develop and lead a consistently high‑performing Business Development Oncology team.
Act as an active talent scout in the Oncology external environment and within J&J Innovative Medicine.
Build and leverage networks and resources to identify new, breakthrough opportunities with exceptional value.
Business Environment & Context Business Development & Licensing and Acquisitions play a critical role in building the Pharmaceutical business for J&J. Supplementing internal development efforts with external compounds is essential for long‑term growth. The function provides an objective view when evaluating the value of external compounds versus internal investments and requires continuous direct and face‑to‑face meetings with CEOs and other C‑suite executives of biopharma companies.

Ability to create clear, compelling business cases that significantly advance J&J’s growth and competitive advantage.
Ability to influence and lead multifunctional teams toward a shared vision.
Skill to prioritize and focus on the right ideas, opportunities, issues, and projects based on business strategy.

Ability to scan and scout outside of J&J and identify breakthrough opportunities.
Strong analytical skills in business financial information, including target company term sheets, financial statements, and deal situation analyses.
Knowledge of the Oncology space is a plus.
Previous Business Development and licensing experience is mandatory.
Required Education and Experience Advanced degree (Ph.D., MBA, M.S., or equivalent) required. Minimum 15 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, with proven experience in bringing new compounds to companies. Personal accountability at project decision/execution level is required.
Compensation Base salary range: $271,150 to $366,850. Eligible for an annual performance bonus and a long‑term incentive program. Travel: 25% domestic and international.
