General Engineer (Safety) – Federal Transit Administration Positions open to U.S. Citizens and Federal Employees.

Summary This role acts as liaison between FTA Headquarters and regional offices, conducting safety oversight, compliance activities, and technical compliance reviews.

Duties

Act as liaison between regional offices and FTA Headquarters, providing advice on safety issues.

Support communication and coordination between regional offices and TSO.

Assist recipients and the region with safety grant applications, project implementation, inspections, oversight, and coordination.

Travel up to 30% of the time.

Requirements

U.S. citizen and eligible for consideration.

Specialized experience and education as required for GS‑13 or GS‑14.

Additional conditions: 1‑year probationary period, selective service registration for applicable males, government travel card, time‑in‑grade requirements.

Qualifications – GS‑13

At least one year of experience equivalent to GS‑12, including analytical studies for transit safety programs.

Experience interpreting, drafting, reviewing, and editing guidance or regulations.

Communication skills with internal and external stakeholders.

Qualifications – GS‑14

At least one year of experience equivalent to GS‑13 with advanced analytical and reporting duties.

Experience leading projects, summarizing team progress, and mentoring staff.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

Safety Technical Analysis – knowledge of safety principles and hazard mitigation.

Transit Safety and Compliance – knowledge of rail operations, maintenance, and safety laws.

Communication – strong interpersonal, oral and written skills.

Education Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (ABET accredited) or related field meeting specified course requirements.

Or equivalent combination of education and experience, including professional registration or licensure (PE, EIT) or successful FE exam.
