Position Summary: Provide public safety services on campus and those properties owned, controlled, or occupied by the University. Engage in preventive patrols on foot and by vehicle. Respond to calls for service from University personnel and the public.
Make constitutional criminal arrests under the 4th amendment and prepare necessary documentation and testify in court. Conduct investigations. Provide for security and safety of property and persons at University public ceremonies and events. Maintain custody and disposal of lost and found property. Candidates with certification of graduation from a POST basic academy are considered lateral entry, and are sworn in as Police Officers on the date of hire.
Responsibilities
Protect university employees, students, and the general public; patrol and safeguard university property; maintain law and order; and perform related duties. Patrol campus buildings and grounds; protect individuals and/or control crowds during assemblies or disturbances; guard property against fire, theft, vandalism, and illegal entry. Answer calls and complaints and take necessary police action. Take proper police action at the scene of crime (e.g., administer first aid, gather evidence, locate witnesses, and make arrests).
Gather and analyze accidents, property damage, fires, law violations, thefts, and disturbances of the peace. Gather/analyze evidence, make arrests, and appear in court as required.
May direct and control parking regulations and issue traffic citations.
Training and development; other duties as assigned.
Work with City of Berkeley police force as required.
Required Qualifications
Thorough knowledge of First Aid/CPR, campus streets, buildings, parking lots, general law enforcement procedures, vehicle laws, and use of firearms.
Ability to observe situations analytically, impartially, and objectively, and record pertinent information accurately and completely.
Carry a firearm.
Must be a U.S. citizen or be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law.
Must have no felony convictions.
Excellent verbal and written skills and the ability to interact with a diverse community.
Excellent ability to use computer devices and programs and other modern law enforcement technologies and tools.
Thorough understanding of modern policing issues, philosophies, practices, and trends within the university environment.
Meet all other requirements for peace officers as established by law and the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.
Education
High school diploma and/or equivalent certification/experience/training.
Licenses/Certification
Must maintain valid CA driver’s license and clean DMV record.
Completion of basic P.O.S.T. certification or successful completion of the Regular Basic Course within the past 3 years.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree or higher.
Salary & Benefits This is a full-time (40 hrs a week) non-exempt career position, paid hourly and eligible for UC Benefits. The budgeted hourly range is $50.61 (step 1.0) – $61.17 (step 5.0). A $12,000 hiring bonus is included within compensation. Under California law, the university must provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role; salary offers are based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
