General Engineer – Architect of the Capitol Summary:

The position is located in the Architect of the Capitol (AOC), Office of the Chief Operations Officer, Executive Director of Facilities Operations, House Office Buildings (HOB), Tenant Services Division. The incumbent serves as a General Engineer, assisting the Supervisory Architect/Engineer of the Capital Projects Branch in managing and administering engineering projects in the HOB, overseeing construction and renovation projects from planning to execution.

Responsibilities Assist the Supervisory Architect/Engineer in managing and administering engineering projects, oversee construction and renovation projects from planning to execution, and support capital projects within the House Office Buildings (HOB).

Qualifications Basic Requirements:

A. Bachelor’s Degree in professional engineering; the program must either (1) lead to a bachelor’s degree in a school of engineering with at least one ABET‑accredited program; or (2) include differential and integral calculus plus courses in at least five of the seven areas of fundamental engineering science or physics.

B. Combination of education and experience: College‑level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnishes thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering and a good understanding of engineering science and techniques. Demonstrated by one of: Professional registration or licensure (Engineer Intern, Engineer in Training, or licensed Professional Engineer);

Evidence of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering examination or equivalent written test;

Success in completing at least 60 semester hours of specified courses;

Related curriculum leading to a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate scientific field with at least one year of professional engineering experience under supervision.

Specialized Experience:

Minimum 52 weeks of experience equivalent to GS‑12 level, including: directing or leading design and construction of multi‑million‑dollar projects; evaluating operational effectiveness and recommending improvements; negotiating contracts and design changes; managing construction or renovation projects from planning to execution.

The AOC is responsible for maintaining, operating, developing, and preserving 18.4 million square feet of buildings and more than 570 acres of land across Capitol Hill.
