Capital One’s growing Legal department offers a fast‑paced, collaborative environment for top talent to enhance their skills and broaden their knowledge. This role allows you to use your depth and breadth of experience to strategize and influence management and business lines, engage with technology such as generative AI, and help mitigate risks.

Responsibilities

Identifying and assessing legal risks associated with Capital One credit card products and related business operations, including contracts, servicing materials, new technologies and innovative processes.

Translating the laws and legal requirements for the business teams and the business intent for the legal team and legal subject matter experts.

Ensuring support is provided in a timely manner to meet regulatory and business requirements.

Actively engaging with colleagues to provide legal support as part of a collaborative and cross‑functional team.

Partnering internally with other business counsel and legal subject matter experts to drive consistency and best practices.

Partnering closely with other Compliance and Risk advisors to drive comprehensive and consistent support.

Basic Qualifications

Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.

Active member in good standing of at least one state bar.

At least 3 years of experience as an attorney in a law firm, at a government agency, as a military judge advocate or in‑house counsel.

Preferred Qualifications

4+ years of experience as an attorney in a law firm, in‑house legal department or government agency doing work related to the financial services industry.

Proficiency with consumer financial regulatory laws.

Familiarity with and interest in emerging technologies in consumer financial services and ability to assess associated legal risks.

Experience reviewing, drafting, and interpreting complex commercial agreements with the ability to identify and mitigate legal and operational risk.

Ability to work in a dynamic environment and flexibility to adapt to changing needs.

Ability to work in a collaborative manner, and clearly communicate complex legal principles to colleagues ranging from frontline agents to business leaders.

Ability and desire to learn new areas of law.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Strong analytical and organizational skills.

This role is hybrid meaning associates spend 3 days per week in-person at one of our offices listed on this job posting.

The minimum and maximum full‑time annual salaries for this role are listed below by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations.

Chicago, IL: $144,000 - $164,400 for Manager, Counsel

McLean, VA: $158,400 - $180,800 for Manager, Counsel

Richmond, VA: $144,000 - $164,400 for Manager, Counsel

Riverwoods, IL: $144,000 - $164,400 for Manager, Counsel
