About The Position The IP Attorney is responsible for a wide range of IP legal matters relating to product development at one or more technology centers. Under the supervision of a Senior IP Counsel, the IP Attorney manages an assigned IP portfolio and develops and maintains the IP strategy for technology development within the assigned areas. The successful candidate will have very strong experience in patent drafting and prosecution, patent portfolio management, patent validity and infringement analyses, and client counseling. The right candidate will be a self‑starter with a team attitude and able to perform independently while completing tasks within structured timelines. Strong verbal and written communication skills are necessary to actively engage with the center engineering team and be a trusted IP legal advisor to the management team.

Responsibilities

Review and evaluate SLB and 3rd party patent portfolios to develop knowledge and competency in the assigned technology areas.

Review and evaluate new invention disclosures and recommend disposition to management.

Supervise outside counsel in the preparation and prosecution of patent applications and manage the corresponding IP docket.

Provide IP review and prepare IP reports for technology development projects.

Prepare, review and negotiate development, confidentiality and consulting agreements.

Plan and conduct brainstorming sessions with technology development team and stakeholders on assigned technology topics.

Perform fact gathering and initial analysis for right‑to‑use, infringement and validity opinions.

Train and counsel center employees and managers in IP legal issues and company policies.

Assist in maintaining trade secret protection for the center, through appropriate confidentiality agreements, intellectual property agreements with employees and technical publication approval.

Direct, supervise and assist outside counsel on legal matters affecting the center.

Assist in the development, implementation and update of the IP strategy for the center(s).

Monitor the IP activity of competitors and advise the business and legal management team.

Qualifications

Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school; active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.

USPTO Registration.

Minimum 5 years of experience in practicing patent law.
