What You Will Be Doing In collaboration with the Division of Wildlife Conservation, this position serves as a professional-level geneticist and project leader with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG) Gene Conservation Laboratory (GCL) for complex wildlife genetics and genomics research projects across the State of Alaska. Responsibilities include designing and implementing projects using proven genetic methods, molecular techniques, and population genetic theory; providing consultation on genetic questions and coordination of genetic research across the state; compiling and analyzing data; presenting findings in oral and written formats to science and non-science audiences; providing review and authorship of research manuscripts; and preparing and submitting grant applications. A key component of the work will entail building relationships and collaborations across state, federal, tribal, university, non-governmental, and international entities to help further the goal of sustainable wildlife management in the state.

The Working Environment You Can Expect This full-time position is based at the ADFG office in Anchorage, Alaska, at the GCL. The lab is a dynamic, high-throughput genetics research environment. Work is performed at a computer, through daily interactions with a team of GCL staff, ADFG staff, and outside collaborators. Some travel will be expected for research projects and occasional field work may be necessary for sample collections.

Analysis and Assessment: Uses information technology to access, collect, analyze, maintain, and disseminate data and information.
Biology: Knowledge of the environment, plant and animal living tissue, cells, organisms, and entities, including their functions, interdependencies, and interactions.
Genetics: Knowledge of concepts, principles, and theories of genetics, including biochemistry of DNA, gene interaction, gene expression, gene inheritance, population genetics, adaptation, and evolution.
Oral and Written Communication: Expresses information effectively to individuals or groups, taking into account audience and type of information.
Scientific Research: Knowledge of scientific methods and principles for environmental, ecological, biological, or physical science, including study design, collection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of results.
Technical Competence: Applies knowledge from formal training or extensive on-the-job experience to perform job duties and advises others on technical issues.

A valid driver’s license is required.
The position may involve possession of or access to firearms/ammunition.
Minimum Qualifications A bachelor's or postgraduate degree from an accredited college in genetics and/or molecular biology, or an equivalent combination of biology, biometrics, botany, microbiology, zoology, natural resource management, environmental science, and/or ecology, or sufficiently similar course of study.
Combination of education and/or experience that provides competencies in the areas listed above.
Equivalent To Those Typically Gained By
Education from an accredited college in genetics and/or molecular biology, or equivalent.
Professional experience applying genetic research methodology for fish, invertebrates, aquatic plants, and/or wildlife management operations.
