On Call Program Associate
Position: On‑call Program Associate (Part time) – San Francisco, pay rate $27.00/hr.
Base pay range $27.00/hr – $27.00/hr

Program Description San Francisco Suicide Prevention’s 24‑hour Crisis Line provides immediate crisis intervention and emotional support to everyone who calls. Since 1962, we’ve answered calls around the clock, supported by over 200 trained volunteers. All volunteers are supervised by professional staff and receive ongoing development to hone their skills.
Position Overview Provide overnight, weekend, and various shift coverage on all SFSP 24‑hour hotlines and other crisis lines, adhering to agency policies, procedures, and programs.
Service Delivery
Answer calls from clients on the crisis lines or Access Line.
Assess callers’ needs and provide emotional support in a non‑judgmental manner.
Empower callers to explore options and make their own decisions.
Provide information and referrals as appropriate.
Assess suicide risks and determine an action plan.
Provide Access Line intake and referral support if working Access Line.
Provide crisis intervention and emergency services as needed.
Teamwork
Welcome, help, train, and support volunteers on the hotlines as needed.
Participate in continuing education presentations as required.
Contribute to a positive work environment and culture by showing respect to co‑workers and engaging in positive team dynamics.
Compliance & QA
Record client contacts in the database and communicate concerns to the supervisor.
Enter participant information by inputting alphabetic and numeric data into the system.
Maintain data entry requirements by following program techniques and procedures.
Protect files and data to safeguard participant confidentiality.
Ensure compliance with legal, ethical, and confidentiality standards.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director or Supervisor.
Qualifications
Successfully complete the SFSP Crisis Line Volunteer training program or provide equivalent prior experience.
AA in social work, psychology, or related field, or similar education/training in suicide prevention / mental health.
Demonstrated successful performance and experience on crisis lines.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Attention to detail.
Experience working with vulnerable populations.
Experience with crisis interventions, suicide callers, and call center work.
Ability to engage and support clients with challenging situations and suicide ideation.
Ability to manage emotions and remain calm under pressure.
Effective teamwork skills in a diverse team.
Experience with evidence‑based practices and de‑escalating clients.
Good judgment and healthy boundaries with clients and staff.
Staying awake and alert during shift and strong computer skills in MS Office, data entry, and accurate narrative reporting.
