Job Summary The Attending Physician IX in Neurology is a physician, licensed to practice in Illinois, who has successfully completed an accredited residency in Neurology, and who is board‑certified or board‑eligible. The physician possesses the knowledge and judgment to provide neurologic care to the patients of Cook County Health and Hospitals System in both an inpatient and outpatient capacity. The physician participates in the educational and quality improvement initiatives of the Division of Neurology.
Typical Duties The physician is responsible for the medical care of patients with neurologic disease. In the hospital, the physician will admit, work‑up, diagnose, and manage patients with neurologic disease and provide neurologic consultation for other providers. In the outpatient clinic, the physician will work up, diagnose, and manage patients with neurologic disease and provide consultation services for other providers. The physician will take call and be available to provide neurologic care in a manner consistent with the highest standards of neurologic care and Division of Neurology practice.
Meets and maintains the standards for hospital staff membership as set forth in the Medical Staff By‑laws
Manages patient care in a compassionate, respectful manner consistent with the highest standards of neurologic care
Maintains current knowledge of the practice of neurology
Maintains current, active, Illinois physician licensure
Maintains federal and state‑controlled substance licensure
Maintains Neurology board certification
Meets Illinois requirements for Continuing Medical Education
Meets hospital requirements for Annual Training, Infection Control, and Respiratory Testing
Charts patient care in a complete, accurate, and professional manner
Completes patient encounter notes in a timely manner
Completes all requested pharmacy, insurance, disability and other forms associated with the medical care of patients
Responds to patient phone calls and other communications in a timely manner
Completes evaluations of resident and students in a timely manner
Maintains constructive, positive relationships with physicians, nurses and other hospital staff
Attends designated Division of Neurology and Department of Medicine meetings
Cooperates with Division initiative related to education and quality improvement
Participates in Division Ongoing Professional Performance Evaluations
Serves on hospital committees as requested
Cooperates with investigations of patient, nurse or physician complaints regarding care
Minimum Qualifications
Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) from a U.S. medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, a Canadian medical school accredited by the Committee for Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools, a Doctor of Osteopathy Medicine (D.O.) from a U.S. osteopathic school accredited by the American Osteopathic Association, or a foreign medical school with an appropriate credential.
Successful completion of a residency in Neurology accredited by the American College of Graduate Medical Education.
Certification in Neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, the American Board of Neurology, or the American Osteopathic Board of Neurology within five years of completing residency.
Current and active licensure as a physician in Illinois.
Current controlled substance licensure by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation and Department of Alcohol and Other Drug Services and federal DEA controlled substance certification.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And Other Characteristics
Knowledge of the medical subspecialty of Neurology.
Sound judgment and knowledge of when to seek consultation.
Interpersonal skills and ability to work well with others in patient care.
Ability to effectively teach medical students and resident physicians.
Ability to manage a medical service of residents and students.
Compassionate, respectful relationship skills with patients.
Work effectively under pressure and communicate well in writing and verbally.
Utilization of electronic medical record and maintenance of patient confidentiality.
Physical ability to lift up to 45 pounds, walk, stand for prolonged periods, and use hands, legs and fingers.
Normal sight and hearing with tolerance to environmental exposure.
Work in an office, clinic, and hospital environment.
Physical and Environmental Demands This position is functioning within a healthcare environment. The incumbent is responsible for adherence to all hospital and department specific safety requirements, including personal protective equipment, hand washing, sanitizing practices, engineering and work practice controls, and other safety precautions.
Veteran Preference Preference is given to honorably discharged veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces for not less than 6 months of continuous service. To take advantage of this preference a veteran must meet the minimum qualifications for the position, identify self as a veteran on the application, and attach a copy of their DD‑214, DD‑215 or NGB‑22 at the time of application.
