Job Overview The George Washington University invites applications for the position of

Learning Specialist

within the Athletics & Recreation Department. The role supports the educational success of student‑athletes across all 20 varsity sports while providing academic guidance, tutoring, and study hall services.

Responsibilities

Manage a caseload of at‑risk and additional student‑athletes.

Develop individualized learning profiles and educational development plans for at‑risk student‑athletes.

Teach academic skills in reading, writing, organization, time management, testing, and general study skills; monitor and counsel students during supervised study sessions; adjust tutoring as needed.

Provide academic advising to a caseload of student‑athletes, as assigned by teams.

Oversee First‑Year Experience workshops: develop lesson plans, train advisors, coordinate with coaches and advisors to schedule workshops for all first‑year student‑athletes.

Manage the Athletic Department Tutoring Program: recruit and hire tutors, maintain a database for tutor requests and assignments, handle all payroll and payment tracking.

Manage the Athletic Department Study Hall: recruit and hire study hall monitors, manage schedules and training, handle all payroll and payment tracking.

Prepare reports on academic progress of assigned student‑athletes for administrators and coaches.

Meet with prospective student‑athletes and families to explain available resources.

Coordinate regularly with the Assistant Athletics Director for Educational Support Services, university faculty, and officials to align student‑athlete academic plans.

Serve as liaison to the Office of Disability Support Services (DSS) and coordinate psycho‑educational testing and referrals.

Serve as liaison for Academic Commons and University Writing Center; schedule workshops with writing center consultants for student‑athletes.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant field.

Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position; equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced coursework in teaching, special education, or higher education.

Experience working in higher education and with student‑athletes.

Demonstrated sensitivity when working with students from diverse backgrounds.

Excellent interpersonal, organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.

Ability to work non‑traditional hours, including occasional nights and weekends.

Ability to analyze and interpret policy and procedural questions and prioritize workload.

Working knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.

Compensation & Benefits Hiring Range:

$45,925.13 – $63,191.56 per annum.
