Senior Transportation Engineer City of Bellevue – Bellevue, WA

Job Summary The City of Bellevue Transportation Department seeks a self‑motivated, team‑oriented Senior Transportation Engineer to lead neighborhood traffic safety projects. The role involves designing, managing and executing traffic calming and safety initiatives, engaging the community, and providing engineering leadership within the Neighborhood Traffic Safety Services (NTSS) Division.

Hiring Bonus Eligible candidates may receive a hiring bonus of up to $10,000, paid in two installments. This bonus is not available to current or former City of Bellevue employees.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Lead the planning, development and implementation of traffic safety and calming projects, including speed humps, raised crosswalks, radar signs, sidewalks and curb ramps.

Prepare engineering plans, specifications, cost estimates and bidding documents using AutoCAD.

Provide engineering support for minor traffic operation improvements and conduct field reviews to analyze traffic data.

Collaborate with residents and stakeholders to understand traffic safety concerns and develop public engagement plans.

Coordinate radar sign replacement program and provide support on capital investment projects.

Mentor junior engineering staff and interns to support their career development.

Supervisor Supervised by the Neighborhood Traffic Safety Services Manager.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (or related field). Five or more years of transportation/traffic engineering experience required.

Washington State Professional Civil Engineering license required (comity accepted).

Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a company vehicle for off‑site visits.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Expertise in municipal traffic engineering and project management.

Strong communication skills and customer‑service orientation.

Proficiency with AutoCAD, cost estimating, and bid document preparation.

Knowledge of Vision Zero, Complete Streets, NACTO, MUTCD and AASHTO standards.

Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and work effectively in a team.

Experience with Microsoft Office and engineering project management tools.

Supplemental Information – Physical Demands

Regular walking, talking, hearing, using hands, reaching, heavy lifting up to 20 lbs.

Vision: close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, focus adjustment required.

Noise level typically moderate.

Full‑time, non‑union, exempt position with both office and field work, and occasional public meetings outside normal hours.

Flexible/Hybrid Working Hybrid work schedule available after orientation. Full‑time remote work not offered. Employees must reside in Washington and be within reasonable commuting distance to Bellevue City Hall.
