Tax Managing Director, Core Tax Services - ASC 740

Job Description The Tax Managing Director will apply knowledge to anticipate potential tax issues, communicate risks, and make top‑level decisions regarding filing, preparation, and resolution of questions from federal and state agencies. The position is a critical member of the office/region leadership team and will supervise engagements as a final or secondary reviewer under the partner. The director will also actively participate in marketing, networking, and business development while maintaining client relationships and serving as the primary contact for complex questions.
Job Duties
Tax Compliance
Ensure clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens.
Manage engagements to achieve engagement management metrics.
Practice hands‑on client service delivery.
Encourage team adherence to the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM) policies.
Research
Identify when research is needed and frame issues concisely.
Provide research methodology and serve as technical reviewer of WTAs.
ASC 740 (FAS 109, FIN 48) Tax Accruals
Apply firm policies regarding FAS 109/FIN 48.
Apply expertise in international, valuation allowance, business combinations, and stock‑based compensation.
Review and apply income tax provisions efficiently.
Tax Consulting
Develop, recommend, and implement methods to maximize client tax benefits.
Combine tax knowledge with business insight to recommend solutions.
Utilize knowledge across multiple tax specialties (International, SALT, Estate Planning).
Tax Specialization
Develop in‑depth understanding of one or more tax areas such as individual, corporate, property, sales, etc.
Apply expert knowledge of standards and recommend alternative courses of action.
Recognize as an industry expert and advise clients accordingly.
Strategy Development
Introduce and develop ideas to improve client and firm positions.
Present complex strategies to clients when required.
Other duties as required
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise associates, senior associates, and managers.
Review work prepared by team and provide feedback.
Act as a career advisor to associates, seniors, and managers.
Schedule and manage workload of team members.
Provide verbal and written performance feedback.
Education
Bachelor’s degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred.
Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
Experience
Ten (10) or more years of prior relevant tax experience required.
Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties preferred.
Prior supervisory experience required.
License/Certifications
CPA, Attorney (U.S. admitted), or IRS Enrolled Agent required.
Other professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role preferred.
Software
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite preferred.
Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred.

New Jersey: $190,000 - $350,000
NYC/Long Island/Westchester: $230,000 - $350,000
Washington: $196,400 - $249,400
