Overview
Emergency Nurse – BWH Emergency Department at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. New graduates and newly licensed nurses are encouraged to apply. Cohort starts March 9, 2026.
Responsibilities
Planning and providing patient care for assigned patients in accordance with Nursing Standards of Care.
Assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating a plan of care for a specific patient assignment.
Maintaining continuity of care through clear verbal and written communication.
Documenting patient care in a clear, complete and concise manner.
Participating actively in unit–based and organizational quality management and/or quality improvement programs.
Providing a safe environment for patients, staff, family and visitors.
Administering medication safely according to established policies and procedures.
Using equipment safely and efficiently.
Demonstrating awareness of potential/actual risks of infection and modes of transmission.
Collaborating with other disciplines and upholding the ANA code of ethics.
Assisting with orientation of new staff members and participating in unit–based education programs.
Managing within established budgetary boundaries and supporting cost‑effective delivery of health care.
Qualifications
Education : Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required; may accept experience in lieu of a degree.
Licenses and Credentials : Massachusetts Registered Nurse required.
Experience : Emergency Department experience preferred; ACLS/BLS/TNCC preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :
Basic analytic thinking necessary to care for a group of patients.
Observational skills and ability to set priorities.
Interpersonal and communication skills under stress.
Effective application of hospital standards, teamwork and time/priority management.
Newly licensed nurses will receive a comprehensive competency‑based orientation before working independently. Orientation includes centralized hospital orientation courses, ED unit‑based didactic and simulation training, and precepted hours with an experienced ED nurse preceptor. Orientation is conducted in two phases to develop fundamentals before progressing to critical care components. Up to a full year of combined orientation and training is expected for staff nurses with less than two years of acute emergency experience.
