We are seeking a hands‑on Head of Talent / Founding Recruiter to build and lead the recruiting function at a fast‑growing early‑stage startup. This is a player‑coach role, requiring both strategic vision and heavy individual‑contributor work initially. You will work closely with founders and executives to close priority hires, establish recruiting infrastructure, and scale the team efficiently. This is an exciting opportunity to own the hiring strategy from 0→1 and make a tangible impact on the company’s growth.
What You’ll Do
Build and own the end-to-end recruiting function at an early-stage startup
Partner closely with founders and executive leadership on hiring strategy
Close priority hires across engineering, product, design, and GTM teams (sales, marketing, partnerships)
Develop recruiting systems, including ATS setup, interview loops, and hiring bar calibration
Source candidates proactively with strong storytelling and talent branding skills
Move quickly with a high-velocity hiring mindset while maintaining quality
Track and report recruiting metrics (pipeline health, conversion rates, time-to-fill)
Coach future recruiters as the team scales
Qualifications
7 - 12+ years of recruiting or talent leadership experience
Experience as the first recruiter or early Head of Talent at a startup
Proven experience building recruiting from 0→1 (and ideally 1→many)
Full-cycle recruiting across technical and GTM functions
Strong hands‑on sourcing experience (not agency‑only)
Comfortable making strategic decisions and pushing back when needed
Based in or willing to work hybrid in Los Angeles
Nice to Have
Experience scaling Series A–C startups
Prior experience hiring for AI, product‑led, or technical teams
Player‑coach experience managing recruiters in later‑stage startups
Built employer brand from scratch
Background in both technical and GTM recruiting
Red Flags
Agency‑only recruiting backgrounds
Pure HR / people ops experience with limited recruiting depth
Big‑company recruiters with narrow or siloed role experience
Senior leaders who no longer recruit hands‑on
