Job Summary The Clinical Research Coordinator will perform independently or with general direction at the fully operational journey level of the series to execute, manage, and coordinate research protocols, as directed by the Principal Investigator (PI). The CRC position is for a Gastroenterology Quality Improvement and Patient Safety program. The Clinical Research Coordinator will be based at the SFVA working collaboratively with Dr. Tonya Kaltenbach, MD in the Division of Gastroenterology as well as across other divisions at the SFVA. The research projects are focused on improving endoscopy quality and advancing education.

The incumbent will work closely with physicians and trainees in the endoscopy unit; perform independently or with general direction from the Principal Investigator to execute and manage several concurrent research protocols; coordinate the data collection and operations of studies under the guidelines of the research protocols and in compliance with regulatory agency policies.

Incumbent’s duties may include, but will not be limited to, supporting the management and coordinating the tasks of single or multiple clinical research studies, depending on their size and complexity; acting as an intermediary between services and departments while overseeing data management; managing and reporting on study results; creating, cleaning, updating, and managing databases and comprehensive datasets and reports; managing Investigator’s protocols in the Institutional Review Board (IRB) online system, as well as renewals and modifications of protocol applications and the implementation of new studies; participating in the review and writing of protocols to ensure institutional review board approval within University compliance; helping assure compliance with all relevant regulatory agencies; overseeing study data integrity; implementing and maintaining periodic quality control procedures; interfacing with departments to obtain UCSF approval prior to study initiation; maintaining all regulatory documents; reporting study progress to investigators using technical reports, presentations, and emails; participating in any internal and external audits or reviews of study protocols; and performing other duties as assigned.

Department Description The San Francisco VA Medical Center (SFVAMC) provides GI specialty care in gastroenterology and hepatology to Veterans throughout northern California. This site is a center of excellence in advanced endoscopy, inflammatory bowel disease, and chronic liver disease. GI faculty at the SFVAMC study novel endoscopic methods for evaluating diseases of the luminal GI tract and pancreas, chronic viral hepatitis, and helped develop national practice guidelines and patient/provider information to optimize the management of veterans with HCV infection. The SFVA faculty are active in basic science, clinical and translational research. Research is supported by VA merit awards, RO1s, VA innovations grants, GI society grants, and gifts from industry. The SFVA is one of three primary teaching sites for the UCSF Gastroenterology Fellowship. The endoscopic curriculum is designed to enhance the learning of critical endoscopy skills throughout the GI fellowship program, with the goal of graduating fellows who can adeptly perform diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy for the whole spectrum of GI disorders. The SFVA is a center of excellence in advanced endoscopy, inflammatory bowel disease, and chronic liver disease. Our faculty hold leadership positions in national GI societies, serve on the US Multi-Society Task Force on Colorectal Cancer, have served on society practice guideline committees, and on the editorial board of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Required Qualifications

HS graduation and sufficient experience and demonstrated skills to successfully perform the assigned duties and responsibilities; and/or equivalent experience/training.

Strong interpersonal skills, effective oral and written communication skills to coordinate with a diverse study subject population, research team members at the SFVA and outside institutions.

Ability to work well independently, complete projects in a timely manner, and prioritize multiple projects to ensure the completion of essential tasks by deadlines.

Attention to detail and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.

Ability to work on site at the San Francisco VA Medical Center 1-2 days per week (weekdays only).

Attention to detail; strong interpersonal skills; excellent, effective verbal and written communication skills to coordinate with subjects, team members, other departments and outside institutions; and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment while working with a diverse subject population.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree

Experience with data management, regulatory compliance, and project management.

3-5 years relevant experience

Understanding of patient population to create rapport and a relationship, while also giving insight to what is realistic and appropriate for patient participation.

Prior experience in coordinating study recruitments in clinical research environments and differing participant pools and following existing strategies to meet current recruitment goals.

Prior experience in designing and enhancing forms for data collection, manuscripts.

Demonstrate ability to develop and maintain systems for assuring protocol adherence and data quality.

Experience with electronic medical records.

Knowledge of medical terminology, research policies, and guidelines.

Experience with database building, analysis, and data management with one or more of the following: Access, Stata, SASS/SPSS, and Teleform programming platforms.

Experience applying the following regulations and guidelines: Good Clinical Practice Guidelines, Health Information and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Protection of Human Research Subjects, Institutional Review Board regulations for recruitment and consent of research subjects, Environmental Health and Safety Training.
