The Department of Revenue is filling two positions in the Unclaimed Property unit within the Taxpayer Account Administration (TAA) division in Tumwater, WA: an Unclaimed Property Claims Examiner (Excise Tax Examiner 1) and an Unclaimed Property Holder Reporting Examiner (Excise Tax Examiner 1). is a division of Revenue that administers programs including forest excise tax, fish tax, tobacco products taxes, local sales tax, tax incentives, and reseller permits. The division ensures compliance with the Revised Uniform Unclaimed Property Act and the return of unclaimed property to rightful owners. Responsibilities

Unclaimed Property Claims Examiner

— responsibilities include interpreting and processing a variety of claims, providing quality assistance to claimants and the public, and delivering feedback in writing and verbally to educate and answer questions. Specific duties include: Determine proper ownership of funds and facilitate payment or denial of a claim using supporting documentation. Analyze and review claims using specialized investigative tools to detect discrepancies, fraud, or collusion and to determine ownership. Assist customers with the Agency’s online services and applications. Communicate clearly in writing and verbally. Use independent judgment to accomplish assignments. Answer customer phone calls and reply to web messages regarding Unclaimed Property. Unclaimed Property Holder Reporting Examiner

— responsibilities include first level examinations and accounting functions, proper identification, reporting, collection, and distribution of unclaimed property, reconciliation of reports, processing penalty waivers, reviewing refund and extension requests, applying payments, and setting up accounts. Specific duties include: Balancing electronic reports/files using the Department of Revenue’s Unclaimed Property System (KAPS). Providing direct customer service for the Unclaimed Property Section; primarily responsible for answering calls in the Holder Queue. Processing holder requests including penalty waivers and refunds. Opening and setting up new holder accounts while maintaining existing accounts. Assisting with Safe Deposit Box inventory process. Both positions require coming into the Tumwater office once per week for training for the first six months. Qualifications

Efficiently composing and tailoring professional correspondence to customers. Customer Service:

Delivering less desirable news, fielding inquiries, de-escalating upset customers, and handling phone inquiries. Adaptability and Flexibility:

Adjusting work focus based on inventory and taking on project assignments as discovered. Information Technology Proficiency:

Spreadsheet skills for basic formulas, tables, filtering, and sorting; ability to compose messages and use formatting to ensure clarity. Decision Making and Independent Judgment:

Making independent decisions based on training and choosing the most accurate action when multiple options exist. Time Management:

Independently managing time to meet goals and deadlines. Organization:

Keeping resources organized and ensuring timely responses and project completion. Self-Management:

Motivating oneself to complete goals and working in virtual or in-person environments. Teamwork:

Working effectively with colleagues. Preference (may be granted to applicants who possess): Two years or more of experience in accounting, auditing, bookkeeping, banking, compliance, tax administration, or related fields. Associate’s degree and one year of related experience, or a Bachelor’s degree in business, public administration, or related field. Six semester hours (nine quarter hours) of accounting, business law, money and banking, or finance coursework. Experience with the Department of Revenue’s Unclaimed Property System (KAPS).
