Research Engineer Mass General Brigham (The General Hospital Corporation) seeks a Research Engineer to join its innovative R&D team at Massachusetts General Hospital. The role involves designing, developing, and prototyping novel electrical systems and components for medical devices, leading from concept through prototype validation. Candidates should have a strong background in circuit design, system integration, and laboratory testing, with experience in microcontroller‑based development and high‑voltage environments highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities

Lead design, development, and prototyping of cutting‑edge electrical systems and components in an R&D setting.

Conduct analytical studies, simulations, and experimental tests to validate new concepts and optimize system performance.

Analyze technical data, troubleshoot prototypes, and iterate on designs for enhanced reliability and efficiency.

Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (mechanical, software, systems) for seamless design integration.

Author comprehensive technical documentation, test protocols, and progress reports for project stakeholders.

Remain informed about emerging technologies, industry standards, and patent landscapes relevant to ongoing R&D.

Support scaling of prototypes into manufacturable designs by working with operations and production teams.

Ensure compliance with applicable electrical safety, quality, and regulatory standards throughout development.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field, with at least 2–3 years of relevant experience.

Broad competence in circuit design, signal processing, and system integration.

Experience with laboratory instrumentation and hands‑on prototype development.

Strong analytical and creative problem‑solving abilities.

Excellent communication and documentation skills.

Familiarity with product development lifecycles and regulatory requirements.

High‑voltage system experience is a plus and will be favorably considered.

Work Environment

Laboratory and office‑based work using advanced R&D equipment and prototyping tools.

Strong emphasis on teamwork, knowledge sharing and collaborative problem‑solving.

Dynamic, project‑oriented setting focused on testing, learning and rapid innovation.

Qualifications Education

Bachelor's Degree in a related field required.

Substitutions for a degree are not accepted.

Experience

Device engineering in a hospital, industry, or academic setting: 1–2 years preferred.

Medical engineering experience: 0–1 year preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Skill in management of engineering projects and/or personnel.

Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and medical doctors.

Ability to diagnose and solve technical and/or system problems of moderate complexity.

Computer literacy to the level of word processing, spreadsheets, databases, graphics, statistics, engineering tools and programming.

Skill in technical writing.

Experience using fabrication tools.
