Job Description & Duties The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of statewide maintenance functions, and the Department’s mission, goals, and policies. They should demonstrate proven leadership in managing multidisciplinary teams, project and organizational management, and building cooperative working relationships with government and public stakeholders. Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, coupled with the ability to evaluate roadside issues, develop objective recommendations, and guide technical teams toward resolution, are essential. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required, including the ability to prepare comprehensive reports, deliver effective presentations, and clearly communicate technical and policy matters to diverse audiences.

Eligibility & Examination Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Senior Landscape Architect exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions.

Working Conditions Work is performed primarily in an office environment with occasional travel to field locations, meetings, and public hearings. Travel may include overnight stays. Incumbent may be exposed to a variety of outdoor conditions during site visits. This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquarters location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquarters location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquarters location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a State‑owned or leased vehicle.

Possession of a valid Certificate of Registration as a Landscape Architect issued by the California Board of Landscape Architects.
