Save Job

Sr. Electrical Engineer, R&D Infrastructure Design What To Expect Tesla is seeking an innovative Senior Electrical Engineer with deep expertise in Autodesk Revit to join our dynamic R&D Infrastructure Design team in Fremont, CA. Our electrical design team spearheads the creation of cutting-edge power distribution systems that power R&D facilities, cell production, and manufacturing infrastructure across Tesla's sites. This full‑time, onsite role within the Infrastructure group emphasizes forward‑thinking design, cross‑functional collaboration, and practical implementation to drive the future of sustainable energy and electric vehicle innovation. As part of a team that supports major product verticals at Tesla—including Autopilot, Energy, Vehicle/Semi, AI, Robotics (Optimus), and Cell manufacturing—you'll contribute scalable electrical solutions that align with our mission to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy.

What You'll Do

Lead the development of electrical designs, from initial concept evaluations to the completion of construction drawings for permitting and on‑site execution, ensuring seamless translation from design to real‑world field conditions

Prepare comprehensive electrical deliverables compliant with relevant codes using Revit, including single‑line diagrams, panel schedules, grounding plans, conduit routings, power distribution layouts, and lighting plans

Review submittals, vendor shop drawings, and third‑party designs for quality assurance, constructability, cost‑effectiveness, and alignment with Tesla's engineering standards

Collaborate closely with manufacturing, construction, facilities, and cross‑disciplinary teams to address end‑user requirements, resolve integration challenges, and ensure precise coordination of electrical systems

Interface with external EPC firms during bidding, procurement, and construction phases to enforce compliance, optimize designs, and mitigate risks

Evaluate new projects to determine Tesla's strategic priorities, develop comparative bills of materials (BOMs) for accurate cost estimation, and recommend practical solutions that balance innovation with feasibility

Present electrical design concepts, progress updates, and risk assessments during project milestone reviews to diverse stakeholders, including multi‑discipline teams and product group leaders

Drive the standardization of Revit families, electrical templates, and workflows to enhance team efficiency and consistency across projects

Perform critical electrical studies and analyses, such as arc flash hazard assessments, fault current calculations, voltage drop evaluations, selective coordination, lighting photometric calculations, and grounding system designs, to support infrastructure upgrades and system reliability

Partner with project stakeholders across Tesla's product verticals—including Autopilot, Energy, Vehicle/Semi, AI, Robotics (Optimus), and Cell Manufacturing—to refine scopes, optimize for sustainability, efficiency, and cost, while ensuring designs meet holistic company objectives and validate feasibility through field walkthroughs and practical installation reviews

What You'll Bring

Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or the equivalent in experience

Minimum 5 years of hands‑on experience in designing electrical systems for heavy commercial, industrial, and R&D environments, such as manufacturing facilities, data centers, hospitals, R&D labs, or large campuses, with a proven track record of bridging engineering theory to field‑ready implementations

Expert proficiency in Revit MEP, including advanced modeling, BIM coordination, panel scheduling, circuiting, and integration with multi‑discipline models

In‑depth knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC), California Building Code (CBC), and California Energy Code (Title 24), with a focus on sustainable and energy‑efficient design practices

Strong ability to multitask, prioritize deliverables, and thrive in a fast‑paced, high‑stakes environment while maintaining attention to detail under tight deadlines

Excellent interpersonal skills for interfacing with diverse engineering disciplines, stakeholders, and external partners to foster collaborative problem‑solving

Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in California, or the ability to obtain licensure (via endorsement or exam) within 6 months of hire is strongly preferred

Practical knowledge of field installation methods, means, and materials, including troubleshooting real‑world constructability issues and adapting designs for on‑site efficiency is preferred

Familiarity with electrical studies software (e.g. ETAP, SKM, or similar)

A passion for innovative, sustainable solutions that support Tesla's broad ecosystem of products and operations
