Required Qualifications
One year’s recent experience as a Labor and Delivery RN
Valid RN license in compliance with state regulations
Current BLS certification (AHA/ARC)
NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) Certification
Preferred Qualifications
AWHONN Fetal Monitoring Certification
STABLE and ACLS Certifications (AHA/ARC)
Other certifications and licenses may be required for this position
Summary The Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse delivers comprehensive obstetric care, including assessment of maternal and fetal health, administration of treatments, and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams. This role demands strong clinical skills, critical thinking, excellent communication, and a commitment to patient safety and professional ethics.
Essential Work Functions
Communicate labor and delivery procedures to patients and families, providing reassurance and addressing concerns.
Administer prescribed medications and treatments according to approved obstetric nursing techniques.
Prepare equipment and assist physicians during labor, delivery, and examinations.
Provide immediate postpartum care, including assessment and stabilization of mother and newborn.
Educate patients and families on postpartum recovery, breastfeeding, and newborn care.
Collaborate with obstetricians, anesthesiologists, neonatologists, and other team members to deliver cohesive care.
Respond to obstetric emergencies, such as preeclampsia, hemorrhage, or fetal distress, using evidence‑based protocols.
Document patient care, assessments, and interventions accurately in the medical record.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance maternal and neonatal outcomes.
Perform fetal monitoring and interpret results.
Assist in cesarean sections and other obstetric procedures.
Comply with all regulatory standards, including hospital policies, state laws, and federal guidelines for obstetric nursing care.
Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of labor and delivery nursing.
Required Essential Skills
Critical thinking, service excellence, and strong interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to read, write, and communicate in English.
Ability to comprehend written instructions, follow verbal instructions, and proficiency in PC skills.
Physical abilities: remain stationary, move about, lift equipment (50‑100 lbs), push, pull, bend.
Interpersonal skills: work effectively with diverse personnel, presenting a positive attitude and professionalism.
Technical/Motor skills: grasp, fine manipulation, push/pull, and move during procedures and equipment use.
Mental requirements: cope with frequent interaction with the general public, meet deadlines under pressure, work under close supervision when needed, handle irregular activity schedules, maintain continuous concentration to detail.
