Financial Aid Advisor
Location:
Student Affairs and Administration – 2101 SAASB, Santa Barbara, CA
Hours:
Monday‑Friday, 8:00 am‑5:00 pm (100% time, 100% benefits)
Salary:
Budgeted hourly range $28.88 – $33.10/hr; full range $28.88 – $49.76/hr based on qualifications.

Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Assistant Director, serves as coordinator of a major aid program. Performs tasks at the operational level in all areas of financial aid administration including need analysis, packaging, and revisions to aid packages. Exercises professional judgment to make necessary adjustments when standard need analysis methodology is inappropriate. Advises students and parents regarding the application process, available aid, and alternative financing. Conducts workshops and gives presentations to various campus organizations.
Responsibilities
Program Coordination (25%): Coordinates and administers financial aid programs, ensures compliance, develops new procedures, analyzes problems, communicates with systems programmers, prepares reports, presents updates.
Appeal Processing (20%): Reviews and decides on appeals, analyzes documentation, makes adjustments to federal need analysis, manages large volume of students.
Advising (30%): Provides counseling to students, parents, staff on aid administration, explains processes, resolves procedural difficulties, collaborates with other departments.
Need Analysis (20%): Applies need analysis and award packaging to applications, authorizes and revises aid packages, solves complex cases.
Workshops / Committees (5%): Conducts workshops, participates in committees, provides feedback, reviews policies.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent training.
Proven adaptability and ability to work efficiently with multiple deadlines and schedules.
Preferred Qualifications
Financial aid administrative experience.
Basic knowledge of federal aid programs and application process.
Basic knowledge of policies, regulations, and practices for awarding financial aid.
Basic knowledge of university policies, processes, and procedures.
Basic knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
Ability to apply knowledge of policies to individual situations.
Problem identification and critical thinking skills.
Ability to calculate financial aid with attention to detail and accuracy.
Organizational skills and ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.
Strong written and verbal communication skills; active listening; customer service orientation.
Ability to assess processes and recommend improvements; good interpersonal skills.
Proficiency with standard office software, internet, and email applications; basic knowledge of common University-specific computer applications.
Experience using complex databases.
Special Conditions of Employment
Limited time off during the month of September.
Position funded for one year from hire date with possibility of extension.
Candidate must start no later than two weeks after offer.
Mandated reporting requirements of Child Abuse.
Satisfactory criminal history background check.
