CDOC (SOCIAL WORK/COUNSELOR III) - Substance Use Disorder Treatment - DENVER. Location: Denver, Colorado. The Colorado Department of Corrections invites applications from Colorado residents and non‑residents who meet the minimum qualifications. This role provides substance use disorder services to offenders participating in a parolee intensive treatment program, including behavioral health assessments, individual and group therapy, and clinical management of offenders with mental illness and substance abuse issues.

Job Summary Provide substance use disorder services to offenders in a parolee intensive treatment program, including behavioral health assessments, individual and group therapy, and clinical management of offenders with mental illness and substance abuse issues.

Responsibilities

Provide professional behavioral health services to the offender population, including formal and informal evaluations, diagnostic assessments, and clinical interventions.

Consult with unit staff regarding assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning.

Provide clinical direction to non‑clinical staff in behavioral health care and treatment of offenders.

Assure continuity of care for offenders by making appropriate referrals and providing necessary documentation to receiving units, facilities, or agencies.

Provide crisis intervention in accordance with mental health professional privilege level.

Inform offenders regarding substance use treatment.

Communicate regarding complaints, problems, transfers, classifications, and offender behavioral management issues as it relates to substance use treatment.

Monitor inmate treatment and documentation to assure compliance with standards, assure continuity of care, and complete assigned tasks in compliance with overtime exempt status.

Minimum Qualifications

Current, valid Licensed Addiction Counselor (LAC) credential issued by the Colorado State Board of Addiction Counselor Examiners.

One (1) year of licensed or license‑candidacy experience with the substance use, mental health, and/or sex offender population.

Substitutions

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (CSW), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Psychologist, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT), and a valid certification from the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies as a Certified Addiction Specialist (CAS) or Addiction Counselor Candidate (ADDC) will substitute for the LAC requirement, provided the applicant still has one (1) year of licensed or license‑candidacy experience with the substance use, mental health, and/or sex offender population.

Required Competencies

Self‑control, strong sense of ability to work in stressful, potentially violent situations.

Ability to remain alert, emotionally stable, and mentally resilient under pressure and observant throughout shift.

Tolerance to stress, confinement, and high‑stakes interaction.

Maintain a valid license from the State of Colorado as a Licensed Addiction Counselor.

Knowledge of substance use disorder treatment standards and guidelines.

Knowledge of mental health standards and guidelines.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to read and comprehend the English language.

Ability to effectively communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing.

Ability to create accessible documents and technical content that follows plain language guidelines with accessibility in mind.

Ability to provide direct patient care to inmates.

Must maintain required licensure.

Preferred Qualifications

Current, valid Professional Counseling License (LPC) issued by the Colorado State Board of Licensed Professional Counselor Examiners or a Clinical Social Worker License (CSW) issued by the Colorado State Board of Social Work Examiners, or a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) issued by the Colorado State Board of Marriage and Family Therapist Examiners.

Experience providing mental health treatment and discharge planning with the severely mentally ill and developmentally disabled population.

Experience providing Substance Use Disorder treatment in a therapeutic community.

Experience providing Substance Use Disorder treatment to an incarcerated population.

Experience conducting suicide risk assessments.

Experience working as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
