Job Summary Histo Tech 1
The Histology Technologist 1 is an entry level, non‑certified position which allows the incumbent to begin working in the Bartlett Laboratory under direct supervision. Day to day assignments are routine and of an assistive nature; the incumbent provides technical assistance and support to the pathologists, lab manager, and Senior Histology Technologist. The Senior Histology Technologist and Histology Technologist II provide training and oversee the daily work product of the non‑certified position. The intent of this position is that the incumbent moves up to the journey level Histology Technologist II position once certification is achieved or the incumbent has the requisite education, experience, and certification.
Under direct supervision, the Histology Technologist 1 processes histologic and cytologic specimens to assure timely and high‑quality preparation of blocks and slides.
Primary duties include: accession and grossing assistance; processing, embedding, microtomy, staining for H&E and special stains, cover slipping and labeling of tissue specimens arriving in the department through surgery or outside offices; retrieving specimens for re‑gross; retrieving slides for pathologists and administrative support staff for send‑outs; maintaining and filing finished slides; daily cleaning of processor, H&E stainer, cover slipping hood, grossing station, and overall lab; providing assistance to other departments on requisitions; filling supply requests from in‑house and outside offices; keeping lead HT informed of current supply levels and needs to maintain proper stock quotas; assisting in frozen suite by cutting specimens and staining slides for immediate diagnosis; assisting in radiology with FNA’s and as needed with bone marrow.
Histo Tech 2 Under general supervision, the Histology Technologist 2 processes histologic and cytologic specimens to assure timely and high‑quality preparation of blocks and slides.

Minimum Qualifications
Histology Technologist 1:
Bachelor’s degree in Science or related field & Completion of a Certified Histology Program. At this level, incumbents begin on‑the‑job training and obtain histology work experience under direct supervision of the Senior Histology Technologist or a Certified Histology Technologist II. They then flex (move up without recruitment) once they achieve their certification.
Movement to the journey level (Histology Technologist 2) requires:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Science or related field & Completion of a Certified Histology Program.
Histology Technologist 2:
Education: Associate’s degree in Science or related field & Completion of a Certified Histology Program. Experience: Two years of experience as Certified Histology Technologist. Certification as a Histology Technologist by the ASCP or equivalent required at time of application.
Practice Notice
