Job Summary
Receive, prepare and process pathology specimens following approved standards, policies and procedures. Essential to communicate information, work with surgical and pathology staff, judge consultation need, and maintain professional relationships.
Essential Responsibilities
Perform technical services and operations for the preparation of surgical pathology specimens, including accurate specimen entry, grossing, processing, embedding, microtomy, staining, and documentation of all related tasks.
Conduct ancillary analytical testing, including histochemical and immunohistochemical staining.
Assist with cutting and processing frozen section slides when necessary.
Troubleshoot assays and instrumentation; maintain and update technical policies, procedures, equipment quality control, and preventive maintenance.
Handle material management functions: equipment selection, inventory and supply coordination, order and maintenance of appropriate, cost‑effective supplies and reagents; assist with reconciliation and audit of invoices and bills.
Maintain service filing systems for specimen records, paraffin‑blocked tissue, prepared slides, and related documentation.
Dispose of chemical hazardous waste in accordance with Kaiser Permanente operating policies and regulatory guidelines.
Clarify, resolve, and document quality issues, including grossing or tissue handling errors and block discordance.
Assist with any additional duties assigned by the Anatomic Pathology Manager, Medical Director, or Laboratory Director.
Basic Qualifications
Minimum one (1) year of previous work experience in a histology laboratory.
Education
High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.
License, Certification, Registration
Histologic Technician Certificate within 12 months of hire from American Society for Clinical Pathology OR Histologic Technologist Certificate within 12 months of hire from American Society for Clinical Pathology.
Preferred Qualifications
Gross dissection and dictation experience preferred.
IHC experience preferred.
Baccalaureate degree preferred.
