What to Expect The Staff Engineer will work as a member of Tesla's Quality Engineering organization. This role leads the Factory-Field Quality team with four core responsibilities: (1) leading the Factory Field Quality team - championing development, mentorship, technical growth, and process efficiency within the team, (2) overseeing the comprehensive field data analysis to identify critical trends/themes to drive continuous improvement of our field quality metrics, (3) cultivating critical relationships with field teams to effectively accelerate and streamline feedback to support problem definition and root cause analysis, and (4) influencing key cross functional partners in factory, service, design, and supply chain. The Staff engineer will also provide summary reports to top leadership, monitor countermeasure effectiveness over the long-term, and close the feedback loop with field employees by presenting (virtually) in front of large audiences.

The successful candidate for this position must be a problem-solver at their core, have a strong quality & customer-focused mindset, and have the personal drive and stamina for relentless, continual improvement.

What You'll Do

Lead and mentor engineers and technicians on how to clean field data, analyze trends, and clearly present results

Establish and maintain quality performance metrics

Analyze high volume of data and synthesize down to critical trends/themes to drive continuous improvement of our field quality metrics

Lead/facilitate review and disposition of discrepant materials identified for control of nonconforming product

Cultivate critical relationships with field teams to effectively accelerate and streamline feedback to support problem definition and root cause analysis

Influence cross-functional problem-solving teams to enact process and product improvements through use of QA methodologies; drive the development, implementation and monitoring of effective corrective and preventive actions

Develop and implement quality standards as part of the Tesla Quality System to assure products meet expectations of our target customers

Promote and maintain a culture and attitude of continuous improvement, working within the Tesla team to make it more efficient, safer and an enjoyable place to work

Maintain a clean and organized work area; follow daily housekeeping and 5S standards

What You'll Bring

Degree in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering or equivalent experience

5-8 years Quality systems experience in a manufacturing environment

Strong project management experience across multiple teams using methodologies and software

Ability to analyze data in ambiguous scenarios with an eagerness to learn new tools and methodologies

Experience mentoring, training, or leading a small team of engineers and technicians through in-the-moment feedback, creating/updating work instructions, and providing feedback to leadership

Specific training and demonstrated success in applying quality problem solving methods such as fishbone diagrams, FMEA, process capability analysis, hypothesis testing, DoE, SPC, etc.

Experience with broad variety of measurement and inspection techniques

Ability, willingness to travel domestically, and internationally (5% to 10%)

May be required to support extended hours based on business and production needs

Must be detail oriented, effectively handle multiple priorities, have a strong quality mindset and have the ability to meet tight deadlines

Expected Compensation $108,000 - $192,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits

Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
