Required Experience and Education
High School Diploma or equivalent
3 years of acute hospital‑based coding experience (or an equivalent combination of education and experience)
Licenses and Certifications:
RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator) or RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician)
CCS (Certified Coding Specialist)
COC (Certified Outpatient Coder) or CPC (Certified Professional Coder)
APR and other related credentials as applicable
Preferred Experience
Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Health Information Management or related field
Experience working in a remote environment (required for PRN Coders)
Specialty coding experience in ED, wound care, pain management, or radiology procedures is preferred
Job Duties
Code retrospective outpatient accounts using ICD‑10 CM and CPT in compliance with official coding guidelines
Identify appropriate Reason for Visit, Primary Diagnosis, Procedures, Modifiers, and all secondary diagnoses to support medical necessity
Abstract required data elements such as discharge disposition, discharge destination, procedure dates, physician(s), occurrence codes, and other designated data
Review accounts in denials work queues and make recommendations to the Coding Manager
Determine when physician queries are necessary, route queries appropriately, and complete final coding when documentation is available
Maintain quality and productivity standards set by UTSW/HIM Coding
Mentor and train on designated coding service lines as requested to ensure quality
Maintain expert knowledge of coding guidelines and best practices
Perform other duties as assigned
