Brief Job Description The Direct Support Professional (DSP) works as part of a team that helps people with intellectual disabilities achieve their goals. Responsibilities include routine and emergency care, treatment, and training for residents in state‑supported living centers. The DSP documents daily activities, reports clinical observations, and may provide training/mentorship to new staff. The DSP may also serve as a shift/team lead (“Charge”) responsible for supervising other staff and ensuring the home remains a safe, sanitary environment.
Essential Job Functions
Attend work on a regular basis and follow the agency’s shift schedule, including possible overtime and rotating shifts.
Implement habilitation and rehabilitation, behavior management, crisis intervention, and treatment programs aligned with each resident’s goals.
Teach life skills such as feeding, dressing, and personal hygiene.
Participate in the development of treatment plans and perform clinical observations for medical intervention.
Document observations, changes in condition, and activity participation.
Assist with transporting residents to scheduled activities and emergencies.
Administer first aid and assist with medical needs under supervision.
Evacuate residents during emergencies and manage aggressive behavior, including CPR when required.
Provide direct care and support services to residents.
Serve as shift/team lead (“Charge”) when designated, supervising staff and maintaining daily documentation.
Participate in disaster response and/or Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) activation as needed.
Perform other related duties, including driving a state-owned vehicle if required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)
Knowledge of individual care techniques and developmental programs.
Ability to read, write, and speak English.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Judgment and decision‑making in critical incidents.
Emergency response skills, including CPR and first aid.
Adequate body mechanics and lifting techniques.
Ability to administer safe restraint and perform Ukeru (if trained).
Training and mentoring capabilities.
Team‑work and flexibility in task assignments.
Qualifications & Eligibility
High School diploma, GED, or 6 months of related work experience.
One year of experience working with people who have mental health/intellectual developmental disabilities (preferred).
Experience implementing behavior programs for persons with intellectual developmental disabilities (preferred).
Valid Texas driver’s license or ability to obtain one within 90 days of hire. Out‑of‑state license holders must provide an original certified driving record.
Ability to pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, HHS LEIE).
Must be at least 18 years of age; males 18–25 must be registered with Selective Service.
All employees subject to random drug testing.
Willingness to work overtime, extended hours, weekends, and holidays.
Additional Information The position may also be eligible to earn additional pay for work performed on evenings, nights, weekends, and maximum‑security locations. The applicant must be willing to learn new skills, including Ukeru and Safe Use of Restraint (SUR), and may be required to complete additional training.
