Road Maintenance Technician I – $2,500 Sign‑On Bonus Arapahoe County is hiring a Road Maintenance Technician I to join the asphalt paving and patching teams.

The position offers a $2,500 sign‑on incentive paid in three installments, a competitive wage of $23.60–$27.14 per hour, and a Monday‑Thursday 10‑hour shift (7:00 AM – 5:00 PM) unless weather or business needs require otherwise.

The job will be located at 7600 S Peoria St, Centennial, CO.

Roles & Responsibilities

Perform manual labor with hand tools (shovels, picks, rakes, chainsaws, axes, hand saws, drills, post‑hole diggers, up to a 90‑lb jackhammer, weed cutters, mowers, and side‑of‑road debris removal).

Serve as a certified flagger in construction zones, controlling pedestrian and vehicle traffic and setting up/removing barricades.

Operate snow removal equipment during winter: plows, de‑icing trucks, and tandem‑axle trucks, including on‑call, 12‑hour or longer shifts for storm and emergency events.

Operate equipment such as skid steers, asphalt patch rollers, forklifts, plate tams, asphalt slab saws, hand mowers, woodchers, thermal applicators, and road‑painting tools.

After obtaining a CDL class B license, operate a tandem‑axle dump truck with snowplow or asphalt patch truck for material haulage.

Receive on‑the‑job training in Road Maintenance Technician II equipment (mowers, excavators, rollers, sweeper, loaders, class A CDL vehicles, trailers, pavers, skid‑steer attachments, compactor, paint guns, conveyors, and computer software).

Prepare and patch roadways with asphalt materials, including shoveling, raking, and compacting.

Clean storm drains or perform additional drainage or maintenance tasks as needed.

Maintain all equipment through daily pre‑ and post‑inspection, including proper fluid levels, air pressure, and general cleanliness.

Conduct CDL inspections of vehicles in accordance with federal standards.

Requirements & Skills

High school graduation or GED equivalent.

No previous work experience required for this entry‑level position.

Basic knowledge of safe equipment and hand‑tool operation.

Understanding of safety rules, regulations, and practices.

Ability to perform strenuous manual labor for extended periods.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to attend on‑the‑job training.

Capacity to receive and attend equipment‑operation training and obtain necessary driver’s licensing and endorsements.

Desired Qualifications

Any experience in construction or road‑maintenance work is a plus.

Strong accountability, accessibility, inclusivity, and integrity.

Pre‑employment requirements include a motor‑vehicle check, background check, physical capabilities exam, and drug screen.

Valid class R driver’s license preferred.
