Job Overview Performs skilled trades work in the maintenance, repair, modification, installation and construction of buildings and facilities, performing skilled and semiskilled maintenance and repair work in electrical, painting, carpentry, plumbing, mechanical, masonry or a related field, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor.

Key Responsibilities

Performs basic carpentry, electrical, mechanical, electronic, and plumbing repair and maintenance work.

Repairs wooden structures and equipment such as doors, door locks, windows, walls, floors, chairs, counter tops, etc.

Installs new plumbing systems; repairs and maintains plumbing installations such as commodes, sinks, etc.

Installs toilet paper and paper towel dispensers.

Installs and replaces receptacles and switches; installs light fixtures and ballasts.

Paints interior and exterior of buildings, tables, etc.

Operates a variety of automotive equipment including dump trucks, back hoes, etc.

Assist with other duties as needed or assigned.

General knowledge of the common practices, tools and terminology of the general building trades; general knowledge of the use and characteristics of common building materials; general knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions associated with the work; skill in the use of tools and equipment; ability to work from sketches, drawings, plans or specifications; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to estimate needed materials and time required for various jobs; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Qualifications High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in general building trades including carpentry, plumbing and electrical, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.

Safety & Physical Demands This position is a safety sensitive position and subject to random substance abuse testing in accordance with the Pender County Personnel Policy and Risk Policy. This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms, frequently requires standing and walking and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to the risk of electrical shock, exposure to vibration and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
