Position Summary Under the supervision of the Park Maintenance Supervisor and/or Lead Maintenance Specialist, this position is responsible for learning and performing the skills associated with all aspects of park maintenance, including turf, irrigation, shrub and tree care, and facility maintenance with accepted practices for developed parks. May be required to work weekends, evenings, holidays, and be on snow watch as well as work shifts deviating from this position's normal work days and/or with other work groups.

Essential Duties

Perform all cultural maintenance practices inherent to maintaining irrigated turf grass parks, including mowing, aeration, fertilization, and irrigation.

Assist in maintenance of tree and shrub care, including plantings, removals, weed/pest control, pruning, and shrub bed maintenance.

Perform trash and recyclables removal operations; clean and clear park grounds and facilities of litter and debris; operate a trash/recyclables removal truck, common hand tools, and install and remove waste receptacles and dog waste station maintenance.

Maintain public shelter facilities, including roof repair, picnic table repair, trash receptacle repair, stocking of supplies, painting, staining, restroom cleaning, sanitizing, and grill maintenance.

Assist with inspection of all parks' irrigation systems and drinking and ornamental fountains, and perform skilled maintenance including irrigation repairs to mainlines, valves, laterals, heads and pumps.

Assist staff with district-sponsored events, making deliveries of materials and supplies necessary to meet the requests of facility rentals and work orders; set up and disassemble event tents, tables, picnic benches and chairs.

Assist with documentation and routine inspection and repairs to play equipment within district playgrounds.

Ensure proper care of assigned tools and equipment; perform maintenance on small equipment and notify appropriate personnel of need for tool, equipment or vehicle maintenance service or repairs.

Use district watering equipment to provide supplemental watering to new plantings.

Complete daily activity reports and records as required; attend meetings on project progress, safety, park maintenance practices, procedural changes and other topics related to the operations of the district.

Perform snow and ice removal using plow trucks, blowers, shovels, ice scrappers, de‑icing salt, etc.

Respond tactfully, respectfully and in a timely fashion to inquiries and problems in person, by email, phone and mail providing helpful information and explanations in line with district policies and procedures; handle confrontational or stressful interactions.

Attend and participate in staff meetings, trainings and orientations.

Attend work on a regular, reliable and punctual basis; may be required to work weekends, evenings, holidays, and be on snow watch as well as work shifts deviating from this position's normal work days and/or with other work groups.

Education and Experience

Must be eighteen (18) years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent.

Any combination equivalent to one (1) year of progressive skilled labor experience inherent to park or related grounds maintenance with an emphasis on turf care, installation and maintenance of irrigation systems, playground equipment, park facilities, urban forestry, and horticulture.

Licenses, Certifications and Other Requirements

Must possess a valid Colorado Driver License or the ability to obtain upon hire and maintain an acceptable driving record.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of maintenance operations, irrigation systems, modern landscaping principles, methods, and best management practices.

Knowledge of workplace safety procedures and the ability to adhere to safe work practices and procedures.

Knowledge of laws, regulations, and methods of pesticide application and the safe and proper use of pesticides and appropriate personal protective gear.

Knowledge of hand, power and motorized tools associated with landscape maintenance.

Knowledge of the safe and proper operation of snow plows and snow blowers.

Basic computer and email skills.

Ability to train employees, community service workers, and volunteers.

Ability to exercise good judgement and practice proper safety precautions at all times; comply with district and departmental vision, mission, rules, regulations, safety protocols, policies and procedures.

Ability to adapt to changing priorities, weather events and special work requests.

Ability to interact tactfully, clearly, concisely and appropriately with the public, district administration, co‑workers and other agencies or contractors.

Must be highly motivated and take direction well with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbally.

Ability to work independently and with a team in a fast‑paced and high‑volume environment with emphasis on accuracy and timeliness.

Ability to provide outstanding customer service and get along with coworkers, patrons and supervisors and interact with employees and vendors in a professional manner.

Material and Equipment Used To successfully perform the required job duties, this position regularly uses pick‑up with manual or automatic transmission, snow plow truck, ATV or out‑front mower with snow plow, blowers, shovels, ice scrappers, de‑icing salt, trailers for towing equipment or materials, tractors, and skid steer with various implements. Hand tools including, but not limited to, shovel, rakes, screw drivers, hammers, and wheel barrows; electrical power tools including, but not limited to, drills, circular saws, and jig saws; motorized power tools including, but not limited to, weed trimmer, backpack blower, rototiller, walk‑behind mower, snow blower, and chainsaws. Pesticide application equipment includes high or low pressure sprayers and backpack sprayers, pesticides, fertilizers, and de‑icing salt. This position also uses a personal computer, smart or cell phone. This position regularly drives a district vehicle during the course of daily work, and a personal vehicle to additional district facilities for meetings, training and other business purposes.

Working Environment This position regularly requires strenuous outdoor work with exposure to a variety of weather conditions, ecosystems, and landscapes. Outdoor working environments can be wet, humid, and extreme in temperature variations, ultra‑violet radiation exposure, and precipitation, including unlit or low‑light night‑time activities. Regularly exposed to environmental hazards including exposure to loud noises, fumes, dust, gases, molds, grasses, fertilizers, pesticides, solvents, oils, greases and wildlife/insects such as bees and wasps.

Physical Requirements Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a field environment; walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time; frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb with both legs and arms, reach, twist, grasp, and perform repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; lift, carry, push, and/or pull/drag objects weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted; operate assigned equipment and vehicles while exercising good hand/eye and foot/eye coordination; and verbally communicate and exchange information, or hearing and listening for receiving and interpreting information and warning signals. May occasionally climb stairs and short ladders; work in uncomfortable positions for short periods of time; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull/drag objects weighing up to 75 pounds unassisted. May lift, carry, push, and/or pull/drag heavy amounts of weight up to 100 pounds with assistance, up or down changes in grade, into or out of vehicles or equipment, or over rough terrain or obstacles such as rock walls or landscape boulders.
