The Advise NC at NC State is a postsecondary access programme that aims to increase post‑secondary enrollment for high‑school students across North Carolina. It recruits recent college graduates to serve as “near‑peer” Next Step Advisers in high‑need high schools throughout the state. Our programme is dedicated to closing the gap in postsecondary attainment and ensuring all North Carolina students have access to pathways beyond high school.
AmeriCorps Next Step Advisers serve in partner high schools to increase post‑secondary enrollment among all students.
Next Step Advisers:
Provide one‑on‑one admissions and financial aid advising to any student or family seeking assistance
Organise group events that encourage students and their families to consider, plan for, and apply to post‑secondary opportunities
Establish productive and strategic relationships with principals, counselors, and teachers within the partner school
Enhance visibility of the role through school and community outreach
Document and analyse student interactions to assist in the assessment and long‑term sustainability of the programme
Maintain expertise in admissions and financial aid advising
Additional Details AmeriCorps Next Step Advisers:
Report to NC State‑based program staff, as well as a high school‑based onsite supervisor
Participate in paid training during the summer and ongoing position‑related training throughout the programme year
Participate in ongoing personal professional development throughout the programme year
Commit to one academic year (11 months) of service with a preferred two‑year commitment if mutually agreed upon by the programme staff and the Next Step Adviser
Must be able to relocate to the service area and be involved in the surrounding community
